There’s no JUNK in this box!

Now brewing exclusively in Clifton Park, NY – Thursday, September 24, 2015 –Shmaltz Brewing Company is proud to announce the return of its limited-release holiday seasonals, Hanukkah, Chanukah: Pass The Beer® Dark Ale and Jewbelation 19® Anniversary Ale. October marks the arrival of its latest holiday package Shtick in a Box New Variety 12-Pack. Candles won’t be the only thing getting lit this holiday season!

No matter how you spell the festival of lights, Hanukkah, Chanukah: Pass The Beer® is the only winter warmer that celebrates all the miracles of the 8 crazy nights. 8 is a miraculous number in Jewish life. Its cultural/religious significance runs the gamut with several holidays spanning 8 days (Chanukah, Passover, Sukkot), and a bris (circumcision) taking place on the newborn’s 8th day. Mel Brooks stole a cap gun from Woolworths at age 8, and “The Producers” won 8 Outer Critic Circle Awards (for more deep shtick, see the 4-pack label listed below). The official Chosen Beer of this holiday season, Hanukkah, Chanukah: Pass The Beer® Dark Ale brewed with 8 malts, 8 hops, heats up at 8% ABV. As latkes are frying and the battle royale of dreidels are spinning, Shmaltz offers some much needed light to the impending winter darkness with its latest fermented creation straight from the tanks at the Upstate New York brewery.

“Back in 1996, Chanukah inspired the first batch of He’brew’s Genesis Ale, hand bottled and personally delivered by friends and family to just a few stores from the back of my grandmother’s Volvo,” says Jeremy Cowan, founder of Shmaltz Brewing Company. “19 crazy years, 35 states and 5,000 retailers later, we have our very own brewery and the freedom to brew any style of beer when we want, how we want. We are thrilled to brew our interpretation of a winter warmer, a true He’brew Celebration Beer and a holiday tradition to pair with comfort food and gelt for my favorite drinking season of the year.”

Hanukkah, Chanukah: Pass The Beer® will be available in 12oz, 4-pack in October, in time to toast the 8 crazy nights of Chanukah and warm your palate throughout the cool, crisp winter season. Hanukkah, Chanukah: Pass The Beer® will also be available in Shmaltz Brewing Company’s latest craft beer package Shtick in a Box, a holiday variety 12-pack fully packed with delicious He’brew® beers and wrapped in Shmaltz’s signature shtick. Shtick in a Box will be shipping from the brewery October 1, 2015, to more than 35 markets through Shmaltz’s extensive distribution network.

Jewbelation 19
® Anniversary Ale: Over the last decade, Shmaltz Brewing has boldly elevated its Anniversary brew Jewbelation® with increased amounts of malts, hops, and ABV. Shmaltz debuted Miraculous Jewbelation® as their first Anniversary Ale with 8 malts, 8 hops, 8% ABV and continued through 2014’s Jewbelation Reborn® (17 malts, 17 hops, 17% ABV). This year, Shmaltz has a new take on the Jewbelation series with Jewbelation 19® brewed with 10 malts, 9 hops, and a smooth 11.9% ABV which is now legal in all 50 states including Ohio.

“Jewbelation 19 pours dark crimson with ruby highlights, a creamy coffee head and greets the nose with a blast of dark chocolate and dark dried fruits,” said Richie Saunders, lead brewer at Shmaltz. “Rich, complex roasted malts, bakers chocolate, notes of caramel, dark fruit and hops fill the palate while the robust heat lingers through to the finish.” Jewbelation 19® blurs the boundaries of Porter, Stout, Old Ale and Barleywines and continues Shmaltz’s long history of brewing big, robust beers that redefine traditional beer categories.

Pick up a bottle of Jewbelation 19® Anniversary Ale to pair with a decadent dessert or share with friends for a hearty winter meal. Its rich malt base also makes it an ideal beer to stash away in the beer cellar since the ale will gain complexity and flavor as it ages and blends over time. Jewbelation 19® Anniversary Ale will be available in 22 oz. bottles and draught in the 35 states where He’brew Beer is sold starting October 2015.

THE 19TH ANNIVERSARY GIFT IS BRONZE. Not exactly silver or gold, but at least it’s on the medal stand! And the Bronze Age was a giant leap forward from the Stone Age – the invention of writing, metal alloys, and year-round agriculture. Evolution! 19 letters spell “He’brew The Chosen Beer”. The Hebrew lunar calendar syncs with the solar cycle every 19 years. In 1919, Congress passed the 19th Amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote. Yeay! Congress also passed the Volstead Act which led to Prohibition. Boo! The Vietnam War lasted 19.5 years. The anti-war synth hit “19” reached #1 in the UK (‘85). August 19 is the UN’s World Humanitarian Day. Though I really hate the song, I got my 1st girlfriend in 5th grade because of “Hey 19” by Steely Dan. Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” (which I still love) was named the 19th greatest hard rock song by VH1. At age 19, Lenny Bruce got an honorable discharge from the Navy for posing as a transvestite, Barbra Streisand debuted on Broadway, and Rodney Dangerfield first changed his name to Jack Roy, performing in the Catskills, near our new brewery. Groucho Marx, who once danced the Charleston on the crushed remains of Hitler’s bunker, died the 19th of August (’77). His quip, “Humor is reason gone mad,” inspired the unofficial slogan of the Bronze Age, “He who smelt it, dealt it.” L’Chaim to the power of 19!

8 is a miraculous number in Jewish life. Chanukah, Passover, and Sukkot span 8 days. 8 humans survived the deluge on Noah’s ark. Maimonides delineated 8 levels of tzedakah, (charity). A bris (circumcision) comes on day 8. King Solomon completed the First Temple in the 8th month of the 8th year… “Seinfeld” ran 8 years. Dylan has 8 Grammys; Babs, 8 Golden Globes. Einstein couldn’t write until age 8. Freud, the eldest of 8 children, took 8 years to complete his medical degree. Mel Brooks stole a cap gun from Woolworths at age 8, and “The Producers,” won 8 Outer Critic Circle Awards. Winona Ryder had 8 prescription medications in her purse when arrested for shoplifting. This holiday season we celebrate all the dedicated souls with the chutzpah to rise up and to risk lighting those final precious drops of sacred oil. To the courageous and the curious, the clowns and the creators. To all the Tribe of Shmaltz. To Life! L’Chaim!

Back Forty Beer Co. Releases Fall & Winter Seasonal Trade Day Cuban Coffee Stout

GADSDEN, Ala. – Oct. 1, 2015 – Back Forty Beer Co.’s newest seasonal release, Trade Day Cuban Coffee Stout, is a testament that beer and coffee bring people together.

Trade Day, Back Forty’s first production release stout, spent three years in the test-batch phase to perfect the smooth, earthy tones and bold coffee notes that make this stout so unique. Made with five different grains and roasted barley, ground Cuban coffee is added to the beer post-fermentation to provide a balanced coffee taste.

“The ‘Trade Day’ name is a nod to the old Southern tradition of gathering at the crossroads to buy and sell goods of all kinds, and also pays tribute to the recent efforts by the United States to reinstate trade with our Cuban neighbors,” said Back Forty COO Tripp Collins. “Back Forty is committed to celebrating Alabama cultural traditions that have been bringing people together for generations, and we think that Trade Day Cuban Coffee Stout does just that.”

For centuries stouts have traditionally been paired with local oysters as a cold weather delicacy. Continuing that tradition, Trade Day Cuban Coffee Stout pairs perfectly with fresh Alabama oysters, which is why Back Forty includes an “Alabama Oysters” seal to the food pairing suggestions on every Trade Day label.

“The oysters’ salty and buttery flavor profile really compliment the rich flavors of the stout, making for a well-rounded flavor combination,” said Collins. “Highlighting local oysters on the Trade Day food pairings is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to our local Alabama farmers, their world class products, and dedication to their craft.”

While developing Trade Day’s unique recipe, Back Forty visited the Auburn University Shellfish Laboratory to learn more about Alabama oyster farmers and experience the process farming the oysters in our local waters to serving them at the best restaurants and raw bars.

“Alabama’s oyster farmers put a great deal of pride in what they do. We are excited to partner with Back Forty who puts the same passion into their beer,” said Bill Walton, associate professor at Auburn University School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences. “When you eat an Alabama oyster or drink a Back Forty beer, it’s a reflection of the hard work and dedication that goes into producing world-class products that are putting our state on the map.”

Trade Day is now available for a limited time throughout fall and winter in 12-ounce glass bottles and on draft in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee markets.

Karl Strauss Brewing Company Celebrates 3 Medal Wins at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival®

San Diego, CA— October 1st, 2015        The 2015 Great American Beer Festival® (GABF®) awards ceremony was held in Denver, Colorado last weekend, and the Karl Strauss brewing team proudly headed back to San Diego with 3 medals awarded across a wide range of beer styles – International-Style Pale Ale, South German-Style Hefeweizen, and American-Style Black Ale.

Karl Strauss was one of only eight breweries, out of the 1,552 breweries competing at this year’s GABF®, to win three or more medals. Long recognized for having an award-winning line of core beers, the brewery won medals for two experimental, small batch releases and a seasonal favorite.

Windansea Wheat added a bronze medal to its growing collection, bringing its total count to ten medals awarded in beer competitions. This winning batch of the core seasonal release was brewed out of the company’s main brewery in Pacific Beach. In addition to this brewing facility, Karl Strauss uniquely operates a network of 8 satellite breweries where brewers are encouraged to experiment with new styles and brew what inspires them. The medal-winning Black Ale, Singularity, was brewed by Matt Dale at the satellite brewery located in Costa Mesa. The medal-winning San Diego-Style IPA was brewed by Lyndon Walker at the satellite brewery in La Jolla.

”We have a highly talented, creative team of brewers. It’s awesome to give them artistic freedom to brew dynamic beers at our satellite breweries. Winning medals for two small batch releases is a testament to their talent and the success of our small batch program. And medaling again on our Bavarian Hef reinforces that we also make world class beers in traditional styles.” –Karl Strauss Brewmaster Matt Johnson.

In just the last 6 years, Karl Strauss has amassed a trophy case of 85 medals won at the most prestigious regional, national, and international competitions.

“We are honored to have helped launch San Diego’s craft beer scene and we’re stoked to keep winning medals across such a range of beer styles,” says Johnson.

2015 GABF® medal-winning beers from Karl Strauss Brewing Company:

  • San Diego-Style IPA: Bronze, International-Style Pale Ale. KARL’s brewers have been hard at work developing a recipe for the perfect San Diego-style IPA that showcases hops, front and center. This award-winning batch offers citrusy hop-forward aromatics, tropical fruit flavors and a crisp, hoppy finish.
  • Windansea Wheat: Bronze, South German-Style Hefeweizen. A seasonal offering, this true Bavarian-style Hefeweizen is brewed with a centuries old strain of German weissbier yeast that yields flavors of clove, banana and bubble gum for a refreshing beer that needs no citrus fruit garnish.
  • Singularity: Silver, American-Style Black Ale. Singularity is an experimental Black IPA. Black and toasted caramel malts give this beer complex, bready, roasted flavor while additions of Warrior and Cascade hops provide grapefruit and floral hop character.

Lompoc Brewing, one of Portland’s long-established craft breweries, wins prestigious Great American Beer Festival® Award

PORTLAND, Ore. – Lompoc Brewing’s Proletariat Red won a Silver Medal at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival® (GABF) which took place in Denver, Colorado on Sept. 26.

Proletariat Red won silver in the American-Style Amber/Red Ale category, out of a total of 94 entries. This was only the second time Lompoc has entered the prestigious competition.

“It’s nice to get some recognition from our peers for a Lompoc classic,” stated Lompoc owner Jerry Fechter. “I’ve always thought Proletariat Red is one of the Northwest’s best Reds and now we have validation with a GABF medal.”

Deep chestnut in color, Proletariat Red features a toasted malt profile with biscuit undertones leading to notes of caramelized pear and cinnamon. It strikes an ideal balance between malt and hops.

“We are very proud to have received this medal,” exclaimed head brewer Bryan Keilty. “Everybody on the Lompoc team works extremely hard to make the finest beer in the Northwest. The GABF is an amazing event and reminds us how lucky we are to be in the craft beer industry.”

To celebrate the win, Lompoc will be offering tastes of Proletariat Red to everyone at all five of its pubs this Friday through Sunday.

Lompoc was one of 16 breweries in Oregon awarded a total of 19 medals — including five bronze medals, seven silvers and seven golds.
