Tampa Bay Brewing Company Signs Distribution Agreement With Brown Distributing Co.

As one of Florida’s oldest breweries, Tampa Bay Brewing Company (TBBC) has methodically grown their business outward from Tampa continually innovating and embracing new consumers. As it was time to enter into the long awaited South Florida and Treasure Coast markets, Tampa Bay Brewing has partnered with Brown Distributing Company to reach retailers from Vero Beach to Key West.

The Doble family, whom established Tampa Bay Brewing Company in 1995, entered the brewing business in 1993 by opening The Brew Shack Homebrew and Winemaking Supply in Tampa, Florida. Then in 1997 they opened their first brewpub in Ybor City near downtown Tampa. The TBBC Brewpub experienced instant success, which spurred the Doble’s to pursue a production brewery license in order to distribute beer. After 14 years of effort, Tampa Bay Brewing Company became Florida’s first brewery to make the transition from a brewpub license to brewery license in 2011. Since then, the steady growth of TBBC’s wholesale beer has lead to a much larger second location to fulfill the ever growing need of a Production Brewery while the first location still serves as a brewpub.

Since opening, Tampa Bay Brewing Company consistently wins Best Brewpub in Florida and the Production Brewery winning top awards at the Great American Beer Festival, U.S. Open, U.S. Beer Tasting Championships, Best Florida Beer Championships, amongst others. Although TBBC is renowned for its beer, the beer infused cuisine served in the brewpub has also received some impressive accolades. TBBC food has been featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives amongst other nationally televised programs. The mission of Tampa Bay Brewing Company is to create beer and food crafted for the Florida Lifestyle.

Although Tampa Bay Brewing Company brews an impressive number of beers throughout the year, their Reef Donkey American Pale Ale has become their flagship and most highly decorated beer; most notably winning 2015 Silver & 2016 Gold at the Best Florida Beer Championships and a Bronze Medal at the 2014 Great American Beer Festival. Reef Donkey was born and bred for the Florida lifestyle. The development of the beer started with a simple need: a beer that blends well with heat, humidity, and salinity. “I love spearfishing and really anything that involves saltwater. I needed a beer that pairs well with my lifestyle, which is a lifestyle that I find to be typical of most Floridians. Reef Donkey APA fits that need perfectly”, says David Doble – one of TBBC’s Owners and Brewmaster. “I love it when people don’t know what to make of the name Reef Donkey. Once I explain that it’s slang for Amberjack, they get it!” The Greater Amberjack is one of Florida’s most feisty game fish, which inhabit Florida’s coastal wrecks and reefs.

Brown’s Director of Marketing and Brand Management, Ian Salzberg, shared their enthusiasm for this partnership. “We are really excited to work with the Tampa Bay Brewing Team. With their love for Florida, the ocean and canned craft beer, we know that the folks around South Florida will be excited to embrace their beers. I am looking forward to picking up some four-packs myself!” David Doble continues, “Brown was the logical choice due to their simplistic goals of maintaining a quality fresh product that will be efficiently delivered. It was important for us to align ourselves with a company that believed in our product and mantra as much as we did: fresh beer crafted for the Florida lifestyle.”

Brown Distributing and Tampa Bay Brewing Company will be hosting brand launches at various retailers in October highlighting their introduction into South Florida. For more information on their products and events, visit TampaBayBrewingCompany.com and Brown.com.

Barley Mow Brewing Company Celebrates 4 Years Of Brewing

BARLEY MOW BREWING COMPANY CELEBRATES 4 YEARS OF BREWING
WITH THE LAST ANNIVERSARY PARTY AT THEIR ORIGINAL TAVERN IN LARGO

WHAT: “4 MOW YEARS” Barley Mow Anniversary Party
WHERE: 518 West Bay Drive Largo, FL 33770
WHEN: Saturday July 23rd Noon – 10PM

LARGO, FL – It all started with the desire to bring aggressive and interesting beers to the the Tampa Bay area. Jay and Colleen Dingman set out to create an atmosphere that was friendly, communal and open to all. “It’s all about great beer for everyone” Said Colleen Dingman. This husband and wife team opened in Largo, FL, noticing the lack of a local brewery in a very large populated area that is primed for a boom. With the love of art, folklore and literature they set out to make brands that were a little darker and enticing rather than focus on the Florida Sunshine or coast. “This opens our brands up to have a life and story of their own and be larger than a geographical or regional area, it also has helped set us apart amongst the growing craft beer scene in FL”, said owner Jay Dingman.

Saturday July 23rd marks the 4th Anniversary of Barley Mow Brewing Company, and the last time they will be hosting the event at their current location in Largo. By next year they will be in a brand new location. The party will run from noon until 8pm. There will be over 50 different types of Barley Mow brew pouring all day long ranging from their Barrel Aged Unkindness Black Ale to their Calliope Tart Cherry – Lemon Shandy.

This event is family and dog friendly. The day will also include live music from local artists including Impulse, The Trigger City Trio and the All Brewer Band The Fermenters. Food from Out of the Pot Mobile Eatery, Charlie Tulum’s Dos Tacos food truck, and Lolo Ono Hawaiian Shaved Ice. Along with special guests from Hopcloth, the Pinellas Shriners and the Pinellas Chocolate Company, to name a few.

For more information on the Barley Mow Brewing Company:
-The Barley Mow Brewing Company was founded by Jay and Colleen Dingman. Barley Mow(Pronounced \ˈmō\ )Brewing Company, Tavern and Tasting room is located in downtown Largo, FL. in Pinellas County. They have a 2 BBL system in their tavern and a 30 BBL brewhouse, with a 3000 BBL fermentation capacity all in a 25,000 sq. foot production brewery and a new canning line.

“Our beers are brewed simply, with hard work and thoughtful ingredients by honest people who are sincerely and wholly dedicated to their craft. Simple. Honest. Craft.” – Jay Dingman Head Brewer/Owner

The tavern has 14 constantly rotating taps and Beer Engine. They also have an amazing wine list and selected spirits for friends and family that want to enjoy a good time, but craft beer still isn’t quite their thing. At night, we pick up the pace with lively entertainment in our 1200 sq/ft beer garden.

Their core brands include Americana – Golden Ale, The Unkindness – American Black Ale, Quackalope – American IPA, and Maven – Chocolate Milk Stout.

Florida Keys Brewing Signs Distribution Agreement With Brown Distributing Co.

Florida Keys Brewing Company of Islamorada, Florida is a true, island brewery making the jump into distribution. Owners, Craig and Cheryl McBay formed the company in 2012 and opened their doors in Feb, 2015 with the vision to bring The Keys a genuine local beer. Cheryl, a native Conch, and Craig, a transplant from Canada, met in the Keys (down the street from their brewery) in 2007. After moving to West Palm Beach for a couple of years, the couple decided to move back to Islamorada to open Florida Keys Brewery. As a true family business, Craig focuses his efforts on recipe development and production while Cheryl spearheads the branding and overall marketing, which is clearly influenced by her upbringing in the keys.

Florida Keys Brewing is located in the Morada Way Arts and Cultural District of Islamorada and prominently features local painters and furniture builders around their building and in their taproom. They have become a keystone for the Arts district, which hosts a monthly art walk. FKBC currently produces their beers on a 1.5bbl system with 5, 3bbl fermenters. In the midst of a major expansion, their beers will soon be available outside of just their taproom.

Their new 20bbl system complete with 4, 40bbl fermenters was purchased from Red Hare Brewing out of Marietta, Georgia will be capable of pumping out an estimated 3,800 bbls annually. The expansion is expected to be complete in July, 2016 with beer available at retailers by the end of August, 2016.

Florida Keys Brewing Co will begin by offering 3 products on draft, which will include their Hogfish Amber Ale, Sunsessional Session IPA and Iquana Bait, a honey hibiscus kolsch. Craig provided some insight into these offerings, “These have been the best selling beers in the tasting room and we felt these would fit best in the bars and restaurants right now”. They offer and will continue to offer a variety of other options in their taproom. “We love our brown ale but thought it may be a little dark and might not move as well as the others”. Although their products will be draft-only initially, growlers are available to-go at the brewery which is open everyday from noon-10pm.

When looking for a distributor, Craig and Cheryl took a lot of time to find the right fit. “Brown’s focus on craft and small breweries matches really well with what we are trying to do.” FKBC will find a unique place within the Brown portfolio as they are producing 100% of their beer, right in Islamorada. “Brown has a great portfolio, we like all of the breweries in the book and want to be next to them”. FKBC will initially be offered in Islamorada and around Monroe County. The idea is to bring the beer to the Keys first. Speaking as true locals, Craig and Cheryl explained “We want to keep the beer local…we want the people here to have it first”.

Brown’s Director of Marketing and Brand Management, Ian Salzberg, shared their enthusiasm for this partnership. “The folks at FKBC are some amazing people, making unique, handcrafted beer and we couldn’t be more excited to have them in the Brown Distributing Family. We have been talking for a while, shared quite a few beers and we can’t wait to work together to bring their beer to retailers around the Conch Republic.”

Brown Distributing and Florida Keys Brewing Company will be hosting brand launches at various retailers at the end of August and at The Key West Brew Fest in September. For more information on their products and events, visit FloridaKeysBrewingco.com and Brown.com.

Three Years and Brewing! South Florida’s Own Funky Buddha Brewery Celebrates Its Anniversary With Festival on June 11

For three years now, Funky Buddha Brewery has been feeding South Florida’s thirst with innovative brews, great food, and can’t miss events. The much-lauded brewery — South Florida’s biggest, and now one of the state’s as well — has helped to define a craft beer scene that has seen meteoric rise in recent years. Now, it’s time to celebrate: And the brewery plans to do just that on June 11th from 2-10pm at the Three Years & Brewing Anniversary Festival, held in Jaco Pastorius Park adjacent to the tap room. This epic, day-long brouhaha will feature groovy live music, a dozen of the best food trucks in South Florida, nearly 100 beers on tap, and an exclusive release of two new bottled beers.

Year three gave Funky Buddha and South Florida plenty of reason to party:

  • 2015 saw Funky Buddha become one of the country’s “regional” breweries, a designation defined by producing and selling over 15,000 barrels of beer (FBB sold 19,500, a number that equates to over five million pints).
  • The brewery opened its signature restaurant Craft Food Counter & Kitchen inside its tap room and launched a successful banquets program in its newly minted private events space.
  • It undertook major projects with important brands such as Whole Foods Market, Tap 42, and Sierra Nevada Brewery, which tapped FBB to head up the Southeast collaboration beer in its national “Beer Camp Across America” release.
  • Funky Buddha released its first new year-round brand in three years, Hop Stimulator Double IPA, in bottles and on draft, and launched a line of monthly 22oz releases dubbed the “Little Buddha Small Batch Series.”
  • The brewery’s continued growth and success has translated into over 120 new jobs in the City of Oakland Park and continued revitalization of Main Street, now home to nearly a dozen new restaurants and businesses.
  • Most importantly, Funky Buddha continued to pour its heart and resources into producing the best beer possible, and the result was a massive distinction: the Gold Medal in Specialty Beer at the coveted 2016 World Beer Cup for Maple Bacon Coffee Porter. In its 20th year, the World Beer Cup judged submissions from 2,000 breweries from across the world, presenting over 6,600 beers. Funky Buddha is deeply honored to receive this important award.

“This year has been monumental for us in terms of quality, growth, and maturity as a brewery,” said KC Sentz, Funky Buddha’s co-owner and General Manager. “I’m incredibly proud of our hard working and dedicated team and what we’ve been able to accomplish. Year four is going to be even more exciting.”

As far as the festival, this year’s incarnation will be even more exciting as well. With its new location in wide open Jaco Pastorius Park, the event will boast an improved layout including over 1,000 square feet of tented space to escape the summer sun with a cold brew in hand. Miami’s The Problem Kids will headline the event with their own brand of hip-hop funk. A curated group of South Florida’s best food trucks will include crowd favorites such as Chaco’s Chinese Tacos, Sidecar Kitchen, Rolling Chefs, and Spring In Roll Out. Confectionary innovators Rhino Doughnuts will provide sweet fulfillment on site.

Nearly 100 beers will flow from the taps throughout the day as well. Funky favorites such as Maple Bacon Coffee Porter, More Moro Blood Orange IPA, and Last Snow will return. New brews will also take center stage, including two collaborations: “Salty Buddha,” a mash up with Delray Beach’s Saltwater Brewing that combines a sour German-style ale with real sea salt from the South Florida coast, and “Tip ta’ Tip,” a blend of two ales brewed last year at Short’s Brewing in Michigan and at Funky Buddha, which were barrel aged and combined to resemble a unique take on an old fashioned cocktail.

Also new is “Barrel-Aged Chocwork Orange,” an Imperial Milk Porter with real orange peel and cocoa nibs aged for six months in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels; and “Three Years & Brewing Anniversary IPA” brewed with mosaic and vic secret hops, mango, and Champagne yeast. Both beers will be sold in 22oz bottles exclusively at the event.

“Our festivals are an exciting time for our brew team to showcase the passion they pour into each one of our beers,” says co-owner and head brewer, Ryan Sentz. “With new beers and returning favorites, we’re always trying to one up what we’ve done before. It’s something that we take great pride in.”

Three Years & Brewing Anniversary Festival takes place on June 11, from 2-10pm in Jaco Pastorius Park in Oakland Park. Admission costs $8 (no advance tickets). Under 21 will not be admitted. For complete details please visit funkybuddhabrewery.com.

Holy Mackerel Beers Releases Panic Attack Cafe Cubano

Holy Mackerel Beers has released a new and extremely delcious beer in their lineup, Panic Attack Cafe Cubano. Panic Attack Cafe Cubano is based on the Belgian-style ale, Panic Attack.

“This is a beer I’ve been playing around with and tweaking since late 2010,” says owner and Brewmaster Bobby Gordash. His concept for Panic Attack Cafe Cubano is to “cold brew” dark roasted coffee and infuse it into the beer. “I’ve experimented with this by using a Randal, dry hopping coffee into a secondary, and by inserting coffee into the actual keg. So the coffee is actually Cold Brewed using Cold Beer instead of water. This process (especially using a high abv) beer seems to capture the most aromatics and flavor from the bean.”

It is not everyday that you see a coffee-infused Belgian-style ale, so this delicious new addition will certainly be new and exciting to your taste buds. Holy Mackerel partnered up with Calusa Coffee Roasters in Fort Lauderdale to roast the Sumatra coffee beans used in the brew, which are grinded right before infusing it into coffee.

Panic Attack Cafe Cubano was packaged earlier in May but will be launching state-wide in mid to late June. You will be able to find it in South Florida around the end of May or early June, so keep your eyes peeled!

Look for a coffee beer like no other.

A Brewery Update with Swamp Head Brewery

Swamp Head Brewery, one of the original Florida breweries to splash into the craft beer scene, has grown into quite a gem.

Founded in 2008 on the idea of providing Floridians with world-class craft beer and becoming Florida’s brewery, their style and mantra has always reflected the unique culture and natural beauty of the Sunshine State that they call home.

Swamp-Head-The-Wetlands-Taps-1200x493

Since their inception in 2008, Swamp Head has grown up quite a bit. The brewery started out on a 10-barrel system, brewing just 700 barrels their first year. With the installation of a four vessel 30bbl system, they are now looking to increase capacity to over 20,000 barrels in their new brewery, says Brandon Nappy, Tactical Marketing Manager at Swamp Head.

With this increase in capacity they are beginning to increase focus in new Florida markets such as Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, and St. Augustine.

The brewery’s award winning year round beers include Wild Night Honey Cream Ale, Cottonmouth Belgian Witbier, Stump Knocker Pale Ale, Midnight Oil Oatmeal Coffee Stout and Big Nose IPA. All of these core offerings are known throughout Florida by craft beer lovers as some of the most consistent, bold and balanced beer coming out of the state.

Since moving into their new brewery in early 2015 Swamp Head has been able to increase focus on the sustainability efforts that they have had their eyes on for years. Working with Solar Impact of Florida, Swamp Head became Florida’s first brewery to harness the power of the Florida Sun via a solar power grid on the roof of the brewery.

“We installed an expandable solar grid, starting with over 50 panels, we plan on adding more in the future,” said Nappy.

Far beyond the use of solar power, Swamp Head does not take sustainability lightly.  From day to day operations to large scale environmentally focused events, Swamp Head works to protect natural Florida and want to do everything they can to preserve it. From reclaiming energy from the brewing process to feeding the spent grain from each brew to local cattle, Swamp Head does whatever they can to reduce their impact.

With an ever growing demand for craft beer throughout Florida, there is one main question that is plaguing craft beer drinkers everywhere.

“When can we take a can of this delicious liquid beachside, poolside or tailgating with us?”

The answer is, not just yet, but hang in there. Swamp Head wants to do it right. “We are taking the can roll out slowly. Focusing on introducing our draft beer to other markets is a main concern at this time, and keeping up with the demand is of utmost importance. We will be there, we promise,” said Nappy.

You can already find cans of Wild Night, Stump Knocker and Big Nose at the brewery and in their home market of Gainesville, but don’t expect six packs to hit the rest of the state in the immediate future.

In the meantime you can expect some seriously tasty draft beer to hit the market over the next few months(see release calendar).

Along with all the new, great things happening out and about throughout the state, they are also always keeping it fresh at the brewery. Keep an eye out for these, and many other, great events coming up!

Taco Tuesdays: Every Glorious Tuesday

12715780_10153815400061163_2322323500428503007_n

Swamp Head has also started celebrating Taco Tuesdays. Every Tuesday from 4-8 PM and enjoy some tacos and burritos from Burrito Brother Taco Co.

There are lots of exciting things happening already with Swamp Head in 2016, and we cannot wait to see what the rest of the year brings. One thing always remains the same, and that is they are Inherently Floridian, and their beer is inherently delicious.

Proof Brewing is Set for Canning

Proof Brewing Co. is the largest brewery in Tallahassee and they are pumped to share some exciting news: cans by June!

They are currently preparing to start canning beer and if everything goes smoothly these bad boys will be hitting the Tallahassee market by June, with hope of spreading to the Panhandle.

“It’s a really big deal because it potentially doubles our production capacity,” says Owner, Byron Burroughs.

To celebrate, Proof is hosting a “can party” cookout on April 29 at the brewery, 644 McDonnell Drive. He said those who buy a six-pack can get a free “EightFive-0″ T-shirt, which is a shoutout to the brewery’s flagship American pale ale.

Proof Brewing Co. opened in 2012. It moved to the Railroad Square Art Park in 2014 and began its large-scale production. It sells six core beers: EightFive-O, Mango Wit, Guru IPA, Assassin Caterpillar, Creatures in the Dark Stout and Ghost Totem Porter. It also serves hundreds of varieties of craft beers.

Burroughs said the canned product will launch and be sold at the brewery. Once it hits the market, canned beers will be available anywhere craft beer is sold, including major retailers.

Brewery Looks to Shine in Seminole Heights

SEMINOLE HEIGHTS — With every month that goes by, Tampa Bay becomes more and more synonymous with the words “craft beer.”

Whether you’re looking to sip on a Belgian Tripel at a cozy tavern, say, Independent Bar and Cafe, kick back a German Cupcake Stout at a neighborhood brewery, say, Angry Chair Brewing or take the edge off with a citrusy IPA before heading out on a flight from Tampa International Airport – Cigar City Brewing – there is literally a dozen options to get your fix of barley, hops, yeast and water.

7venth Sun Brewing, a 4-year-old brewery based out of downtown Dunedin, will soon be the newest spot in Seminole Heights, where locals and tourists alike can enjoy some cold ones. According to owners Devon Kreps and Justin Stange, the brewery’s success in Dunedin allowed them to expand to their new location in Central Tampa.

The original 7venth Sun, with its snug 1,000 square-foot storefront, can only handle a few customers in its tap room, but it has a solid reputation around town for its “farmhouse brewing” techniques. Barrel aged beers, Belgian ales and fruity saisons are some of their more popular beers.

“You hear other brewers say the same thing,” Kreps said. “But we brew the types of beer that we love to drink.”

Stange and Kreps will split their time between the two breweries while they refurnish and rehabilitate the Seminole Heights building, located at the corner of Sligh and Nebraska avenues. The duo hopes to open the brewery sometime during the fall.

“Our success in Dunedin has helped our growth 100 percent,” Stange said.

The new, much larger location could allow the brewery to step into the same league as the big boys in Tampa Bay. Previously, 7venth Sun’s distribution was bottlenecked due to its smaller size. That won’t be a problem at the new facility.

The new location is 18 times larger in size and has capacity for more than 300 beer drinkers in its tasting room, as well as the patio. It also will sport a much larger parking lot than the Dunedin location.

Fans of 7venth Sun’s suds will be happy to hear that the brewery’s flagship beers, including Timebomb Session IPA and Graffiti Orange creamsicle-flavored wheat beer, are here to stay. Plus, the added space will allow for bottling, canning and aging of the beers in a Belgian style. The increased space, Stange says, goes along with quality control and consistency, too.

“We’re still going to be brewing a lot of the same beers,” said Kreps. “But with the larger space, we’ll be able to have room for aging. … It’s going to relieve a lot of pressure from the Dunedin location.”

Yet, it is the sheer volume of beer that the brewery could produce that is the most impressive.

Currently, the Dunedin location is outfitted with a system that only allows the business to brew 850 barrels of beer each year.

The new location, once it reaches its second phase of production, would be able to make up to 25,000 barrels of beer annually. That’s not exactly Cigar City territory at more than 44,000 barrels, but it’s still some serious potential from the planned 10 and 30 barrel systems. In terms of brewing capabilities, it could eventually make the brewery the third-biggest beer maker in the city of Tampa, behind only Cigar City and Coppertail Brewing Co.

According to the owners, it’s not their primary intention to brew as much beer as possible, but the increased size will give them room to grow in the future.

Both Kreps and Stange admit they wanted the original location to be in Central Tampa, because of their fondness for the neighborhoods, but the tight-knit beer community in Dunedin attracted them to its downtown district.

7venth Sun joins Angry Chair, Brew Bus Brewery and Southern Brewing & Wine as the newest beer-brewing neighbors in Central Tampa. All of the breweries are located within the 3.52-square-mile neighborhood that makes up Old Seminole Heights.

“When you get craft breweries near one another, it helps out each other. It makes it a cool destination,” said Stange. “Everyone has their own focus and we have ours.”

The new brewery is at 6809 N Nebraska Ave. For more information on 7venth Sun, visit its website at 7venthsun.com.

Orchid Island Brewery’s “Grove to Glass Craft Beer Project”

About two and a half hours north of Miami, there’s a small brewery where every beer on tap is made with citrus.

Calling itself a “grove to glass craft beer project,” Orchid Island Brewery views itself as the Floridian equivalent of a Belgian farmhouse brewery. The company pays homage to Florida’s rich history of citrus growers by sourcing grapefruit, oranges and other citrus fruits from local growers.

ImperialImprinting.com

“I fell in love with the idea of utilizing local resources to make a beer truly related to where we come from,” said founder Alden Bing.

The area where Bing has established his grove to glass brewing operation is known as the Indian River Citrus District, a 200-mile strip of land recognized for supplying about 75 percent of Florida’s grapefruit crop.

And while the brewery’s proximity to citrus fruits has inspired hop-forward creations like Star Ruby Imperial IPA and East Coast Ruby IPA, Bing is far from the only U.S. craft brewer trying to brew with tropical fruit.

Ever since witnessing Ballast Point’s successful nationwide rollout of a Grapefruit Sculpin IPA variant last year – Sculpin IPA and Grapefruit Sculpin IPA accounted for a majority of the company’s sales in 2015 – a bevy of brewers have started adding grapefruit, tangerine and mango adjuncts to their beer.

An incomplete list of brands compiled by market research firm IRI Worldwide tallied 20 “citrus fruit” IPAs accounting for more than $7.7 million of sales at U.S. supermarkets during the 52-week period ending Jan. 24.

But that list doesn’t begin to capture just how widespread citrus infusions have become. It also doesn’t include market entries from three of the largest craft breweries in the country – Boston Beer, Sierra Nevada and New Belgium.

Boston Beer is the largest craft player to jump on the trend, launching its Rebel Grapefruit IPA – which founder and chairman Jim Koch described as “the perfect marriage of citrus and bitterness” – nationwide in February.

New Belgium, meanwhile, the country’s fourth-largest craft brewery, released its new year-round Citradelic Tangerine IPA, made with Tangerine zest, in early January.

“You know when Sam Adams is reacting, it’s got everyone’s attention,” said Harpoon founder Dan Kenary. Harpoon itself will replace its summer seasonal kolsch with a fruit-forward pale of its own this year: “Camp Wannamango.” And that’s after brewing up an earlier citrus hit with its wheat-based, Grapefruit-infused UFO, Big Squeeze Shandy.

For its part, Sierra Nevada launched a Tropical IPA spring seasonal that isn’t actually brewed with any fruit but derives flavors of mango, papaya and bitter orange from Citra, Mosaic and El Dorado hop additions.

Then there’s a parade of regional players: Abita, Magic Hat, Green Flash, Boulevard, Heavy Seas, Schlafly, Victory, Uinta, Starr Hill and many others have made forays of their own, layering flavors of grapefruit, tangerine, mango, and passion fruit on top of hops bred specifically to showcase citrus flavors and aromas.

“The genesis of this, in my opinion, are three really specific hop varieties – Amarillo, Citra and Galaxy,” said Robbie O’Cain, brewmaster at Virginia’s Starr Hill Brewery, which will begin shipping a grapefruit session IPA in May. “Before we ever started adding fruit, these three varieties gave this citrus quality to beer. Now we can use actual citrus to create another layer of complexity.”

In interviews with eight U.S. craft brewers, the idea of enhancing or punching up bitter hop characteristics with citrus fruit – most commonly zest, peels and purees – emerged as the resounding rationale for the surge in fruit-forward IPAs hitting the market.

“Tropical and citrus fruit makes a lot of sense because you are already getting a lot of the flavor and aromas from these Australian and New Zealand hops that people are in love with right now,” said Jeremy Danner, an ambassador brewer with Boulevard Brewing.

But there’s also a more scientific explanation for why so many brewers are trying to marry citrus fruits and Citra hops: they carry many of the same taste and aroma compounds.

OIB_alden_bing-1024x682

Since launching Orchid Island Brewery last September, Bing has spent countless hours studying the relationship between the hops and citrus. But he’s not the only one: in his quest to understand the best methods for incorporating citrus fruits into his beer, Bing discovered a 2010 research study published in theJournal of the Institute of Brewing.

Produced by a group of Japanese brewers, scientists, and experts in molecular biology with Sapporo Breweries Ltd., the 10-page report – The Contribution of Geraniol Metabolism to the Citrus Flavour of Beer – explores the parallels between hop oils and those found in citrus fruits.

The findings were hardly surprising. Of the six hop varieties tested, the researchers found that Citra hops – a popular hop variety being used by many U.S. brewers – contained the highest levels of geraniol, one of the primary compounds (along with citronellol and linalool) contributing to citrus flavors in beer

Not coincidentally, many of those oil compounds and others that are found in hops also occur in grapefruit and a variety of citrus fruits.

Scientific findings notwithstanding, there seems to be a more practical pursuit at play: even their subcategory’s rapid growth won’t offset the decline of the big brewers, so ultimately, craft brewers need to recognize they need to reel consumers back into the beer category. Since 2000, beer has steadily lost share to a spirits segment that has grown to more than 35 percent of total alcohol sales.

“You look at a bar, and there is a bunch of cocktailing going on,” said Kenary. “The younger consumer is really open to mixing and matching. If you are into cocktails, you are definitely into lots of different flavors. I think that some of these products are a way to get at these cocktail drinkers and pull them back into the beer world.”

And the perfect way to accomplish that, at least many brewers’ eyes, is by offering something familiar.

Brian Thiel, the co-founder of Ghostfish Brewing in Seattle, feels that the small addition of grapefruit peel to his company’s top-selling Grapefruit IPA gives the product broader consumer appeal.

“The citrus flavor profile appeals to people who really like really like the aromatics of an IPA but don’t gravitate toward the harsh, danky bitterness of hops,” he said.

Boulevard’s Danner echoed those words, saying “you can get the benefits of fruity hops without having a beer that is over-bitter.”

It’s far too early to tell if a fruit-forward flavor profile can help craft brewers reach more mainstream drinkers, but Bing is certainly optimistic, and for now, the numbers seem to reflect it.

“There are a lot of different adjuncts being used in beer right now,” he said, “and it seems to me that citrus is an ingredient outside of the traditional four ingredients that can stand the test of time.”

Due South Brewing Company To Nearly Double in Size

Due South Brewing Co. has announced an expansion of their current facility, annexing 12,000 additional square feet of the adjacent bay. Combined, Due South will total over 27,000 square feet.

Open to the public since 2012, Due South has always had a production focus. The current tap room continues to shrink as the need for more brewing space grows. This expansion will allow for growth in both areas.

“We knew we would need more space, it just wasn’t available” states Mike Halker, founder and president of Due South. “Finally the opportunity presented itself and we were able to acquire the bay next to us. We’re certainly excited about continuing our relationship with the folks in Boynton and eventually expanding our brewing operations enough that we can supply all of Florida. We’ve got some thirsty friends on the west coast we haven’t been able to take care of yet.”

The new space will be used for an indoor beer garden, a large air conditioned tap room, a dedicated area for barrel aging and additional offices. There will also be a separate area for expansion of the new ‘Due South Sour Project’.

The architects are currently working on the layout and the new facility is expected to be open in early fall.
