“Beer Chicago” exhibit taps into Windy City’s beer, tavern, and brewery history

Chicago was built by immigrants seeking new opportunities, and one of the notable crafts brought with them was beer brewing. German-Americans established Chicago’s first brewery in 1833, and the Town of Chicago became official at a tavern that year after a gathering and vote of 12-1. Beer has been a component of Chicago’s colorful fabric ever since, continuing today with the emergence of the home brewing trend and a vibrant craft beer industry. “Beer Chicago” provides a unique and engaging historical look at beer culture, taverns, and breweries and the city’s seemingly unquenchable thirst for beer. Learn about different beers brewed in the Chicago area, explore the science of beer making at a hands-on activity station, and encounter the “bartender” at an interactive video kiosk as he shares knowledge about Chicago saloon and tavern history. Free admission. Hours: STWThF 1-5 pm; Sat. 10am-5pm. Location: Elmhurst Historical Museum, 120 E. Park Ave., Elmhurst, IL  http://ift.tt/1JuljwR or call 630-833-1457.

Heavy Seas Announces Stoop Sitter – A Baltimore Collaboration

BALTIMORE, MD — Heavy Seas is excited to announce Stoop Sitter, a collaboration beer between Baltimore area brewers, to be released during Baltimore Beer Week 2015 (October 9th – 18th). This offering will be draft-only and Heavy Seas will donate $3 for every sixth-barrel and $5 for every 50L keg sold to Ocean Research Project (oceanresearchproject.org).

According to Heavy Seas Brewmaster, Christopher Leonard, “Approximately 18 months ago, I formed a social/semi-technical group of local brewers in the Baltimore area. We get together a few times a year to bond, talk about trends or technical issues, and just catch up in general. At the moment, the group includes brewers from Heavy Seas, Red Brick Station, Key Brewing, Pratt Street Ale House, DuClaw Brewing, The Brewer’s Art, Gordon Biersch Baltimore, Jailbreak Brewing Company, and Union Craft Brewing.  We call ourselves the Legion of Foam and open our “membership” to any/all vigilante professional brewers.”

He continues, “Last spring we decided to brew a collaboration beer, called Stoop Sitter, to be ready for Baltimore Beer Week. We brewed it at Union Craft Brewing. This year we’re brewing it at Heavy Seas on September 10th. My hope is that it will continue to be an annual project, brewed to a different recipe and in a different brewery each year.”

In classic Baltimore fashion, this year’s beer is stylistically an eclectic mix just like the brewers who collaborated to brew it. With the smoothness of a lager, the complexity of an ale, a firm bready malt backbone, and a spicy-bold blend of German and American hop flavor, Stoop Sitter is not exactly an altbier, festbier, or an American amber ale. However, it is decidedly delicious and unequivocally Baltimore in every way.

Style: Baltimore Brew

ABV: 6.1%

IBU: 28

Hops: Perle, Spalt, Cascade

Malts: 2-row, Munich, Vienna, Biscuit, CaraMunich

New Belgium Brewing to Tweak Abbey and Trippel Recipes

Two of New Belgium Brewing’s longest running beers, Abbey Belgian Style Dubbel and Trippel Belgian Style Ale, are being reimagined and updated for a new era. Both beers started life as homebrew recipes more than 25 years ago and new developments in hop and malt manufacturing have been incorporated. Subtle recipe tweaks will allow the malty and hoppy characteristics of each beer to shine through. A new yeast strain will help balance the esters and phenol while emphasizing the Belgian character of these beers. Although these are among the first Belgian-inspired craft beers produced in the U.S., New Belgium brewers could not resist tinkering with these classics. Internal sensory panelists affirmed the results a success.

“As an American craft brewer founded on Belgian tradition, we have a deep respect for our history and our roots,” said NBB Specialty Brand Manger, Lauren Salazar. “And of course, there’s a ‘New’ in our name for a reason. As brewers of craft beer, we need to embrace growth and change and continue to push ourselves to make the best beers possible. We think these changes exemplify the very best of old world Belgium and new craft technique.”

In addition to Munich malt, Trippel now incorporates Pilsener malt and one additional hop, Hallertau Mittelfrüh, for an herbal and spicy Nobel hop nose. Trippel is classically smooth and complex, with notes of fruit and spice before a pleasantly warm and crisp finish. Alcohol has increased slightly to 8.5%, 40 IBUs.

Abbey has eight different malts including caramel, Munich, chocolate and now oats for mouthfeel. The addition of Caramunich and Special W malt add rich tones of chocolate and dark caramel with hints of dried cherries, burnt sugar and figs. Sweet and roasty up front, followed by a slightly bitter finish, Abbey is a true-to-style representation of the monastic beers of Belgium. Alcohol rests at 7%, 20 IBU.

For a short time, both new and old versions may be found side-by-side on shelves. Beer drinkers can identify the new versions by their expiration dates; any Trippel with a Best Buy date of 4/17/16 or later is the new version; any Abbey with a Best Buy date of 6/19/16 or later is the new version as well.
