Head to Bavaria with PBS on a Fall Beer Tour Spotlighting Women Brewers and Craft Beer Makers

Portland, OR ▪ July 31, 2015 – This fall the Pink Boots Society is heading to Bavaria for a beer and brewing study tour and you’re invited.  The insider’s tour is designed specifically to benefit the craft brewing industry and beer enthusiasts and to forge ties between independent brewing activists in Germany and North America

“We believe in Beer Without Borders. That’s why PBS is inviting serious beer lovers and members of the trade to join us on the road for the Beer, Bratwurst and Beyond study tour this fall,” says Emily Engdahl, Executive Director of the Pink Boots Society.  The beer tour starts and ends in Frankfurt. The dates are October 5-13, 2015. Space is limited. Info and reservations are available online at Treasures of Europe Tours, http://ift.tt/1jmetCm.

PBS is the world’s largest association of women in the beer and brewing trade, with over 2,100 members across the U.S. and around the world.

“When brewers, beer professionals, taste-makers and beer enthusiasts reach across borders to tell their stories, compare notes, trade ideas and hang together, the craft beer trade stands to benefit. This kind of cross-fertilization is critical to our industry,” added Engdahl.

The beer tour includes industry briefings, educational tours of under-the-radar regional breweries, tastings, meetings with up-and-coming women brewers, sessions with old-school artisanal beer makers and trailblazing craft brewers, visits to the abbey breweries and local food events.

Beer, Bratwurst and Beyond™ brings a new twist to beer travel. The beer tour will skip the Oktoberfest and Big Beer destinations, concentrating instead on hidden brewing hot-spots in Munich, Central Bavaria, the Upper Palatinate and Franconia.

PBS announced that two prominent German trade organizations representing independent breweries have signed on as local partners: the Association of Private Breweries in Bavaria and the Association of Breweries of Upper Franconia.

The beer and brewing paradigm is shifting in Germany. “Upstart craft brewers are challenging old orthodoxies with inventive, edgy new beer styles. Women brewers in Germany are at the top of their game and are slowly getting the recognition they deserve,” says Tom Conrad, of Treasures of Europe Tours, the Philadelphia-based operator that is offering the trip with PBS.

“New-vibe craft brewing is flourishing alongside the old-school artisanal beer culture that has defined German brewing for centuries. The new-old mix makes today’s German beer scene enormously exciting,” added Conrad.

Highlights of the beer tour include:

  • Kick-off event and private tasting hosted by the Association of Private Breweries in Bavaria
  • Session with Sister Doris, Germany’s last beer-brewing nun
  • Series of site visits and dialogues with pioneering women beer-makers in Franconia and the Upper Palatinate, including the Meinel sisters, master brewers in Hof
  • Private tour of a 1000-year-old abbey brewery, meeting with brewmaster and tasting
  • Survey and tasting led by a top German sommelier
  • Series of site visits, private sessions and tastings with Oswald Kundmueller, Andreas Gaenstaller and other craft beer brewers
  • Sausage seminar led by a master butcher who was chosen as Bavaria’s “Bratwurst King”
  • Visit to the home of Zoigl brewing in the remote Upper Palatinate region, including briefing and tasting
  • Site visit and behind-the-scenes look at local cheese-making and small-scale trout-farming
  • Fall Kirchweih festival in a Franconian village

and many other activities.

Samuel Adams, Stone Brewing Company, Sierra Nevada and Lagunitas Brewing Company have joined hands to sponsor the tour and a PBS members-only sweepstakes, which was launched to raise funds for the organization’s educational programming. Four lucky winners will travel free, courtesy of the tour sponsors.

The tour is currently open, but the group size is limited and space is going fast. Reserve online. Additional information is available at Treasures of Europe Tours. Related photos are available here. Learn about our generous sponsors here.

Weighing in on Women and Beer

It’s time to share some personal thoughts on a theme I seem to speak to on a weekly basis: women and beer. In light of the recent Bud Light #UpForWhatever campaign, which included the tagline, “The perfect beer for removing ‘no’ from your vocabulary for the night,” the topic has surfaced once again—and the conversation is spilling over into the craft beer world.

Beyond the general topic of women and beer, the specific topic of sexism is a subject both in beer and beyond. As Bay Area writer and bartender Jen Muehlbauer told Slate.com recently, “I can cite examples of sexism both extreme and subtle in the beer industry, but so can any woman in any industry. I don’t think beer in particular has a woman problem so much as Planet Earth does.”

Sexism Should Not Be Used to Sell Beer

Like any consumer-driven industry, brewers have a fine line to walk. As the writer of that Slate article went on to say: “Sex and sexism aren’t the same thing.” Marketing the concept of consensual sex is certainly different than objectifying women or men to sell a product. Additionally, what appears sexist to one may not be sexist to another.

Regardless, in the past, beer in the U.S. was primarily marketed to what is known as “LDA males”—men of legal drinking age. Based on what I’ve seen, there are still some beer business influencers whose approach to advertising is stuck in this myopic, isolationist mode, as women are just as relevant when it comes to the beverage of beer.

Even one sexist label, logo or beer ad dilutes the integrity of our beloved beverage. From a personal perspective, I often say what feels good tastes even better; but unfortunately, I have seen specific examples of beer advertising that just does not feel good to me. These missteps draw shame and sensationalization from the media, as they should.

But those are actually just rare bad examples in a much larger sea of good. With tens of thousands of beer brands at local tap rooms and on brewpub and restaurant menus, I’d like to make the point that the controversy over sexism in beer advertising is isolated to just a few offenders. Most in the beer community would agree that beer is about being social and connecting people, and that alienating half of your potential customers is shortsighted.

Beer Has No Gender

In today’s more advanced beer culture, we’re experiencing a more engaged customer base with higher expectations than ever before—especially of our small and independent craft brewers.

Simply put, most craft brewers treat and view beer as a gender-neutral beverage. Things still aren’t perfect, but before the sensationalizing gets out of hand, it’s important to note that there has been a shift in the way the beverage is viewed in this country, and cultural triumphs have accompanied these changes.

Before the 1990s, which saw the rise of both the Internet and the popularity of microbrewed beer, sexism-based advertising was prevalent. However, with the viral voices of today’s social media channels, I see checks and balances in play. Vocal consumers are forcing brands to grow a conscience. Integrity is the metaphorical yard stick for the average craft brewer and beer lover.

With thousands of established and upstart breweries producing a diverse variety of flavorful beers, the U.S. craft beer movement has more traction than ever before, and women are increasingly showing up both in the beer aisle and in the brewhouse.

Nielsen research tells us that as of 2014 women consume almost 32 percent of craft beer produced in the U.S. That same year, a team of Stanford researchers surveyed more than 2,500 breweries and found that 21 percent had at least one woman in a top role like founder, CEO, head brewer or brewmaster. Compared to similar industries, that number is actually relatively high—sad, but true.

Time For a New Approach

If beer (and not just craft beer) wants to continue to grow with women, then the industry’s key decision makers need to keep evolving their cultural outlook—including their approach to marketing and advertising.

Frankly, when it comes to beer and women, the way forward isn’t much of a head-scratcher. Just like it’s not appropriate for even one derogatory workplace comment to fall from the loose lips of a behind-the-times sap, sexism should have no place in beer marketing.

Beer has so much to celebrate. We should be very proud that the U.S. is a beer-loving nation first and foremost, where beer sales match the sales of wine and spirits combined. Our craft breweries are small businesses that have helped bring great innovation and a less gender-targeted approach to beer marketing than ever before—I’ll cheers to that!

Let’s challenge today’s generation of brewers and those to come: May we all be a part of setting new standards of marketing that broadens beer’s customer base.

Introducing Jester King Bière de Syrah

We are pleased to introduce Jester King Bière de Syrah — a barrel-aged sour beer refermented with Syrah grapes. Bière de Syrah consists of a blend of beer fermented in oak barrels for nine to twelve months with our mixed culture of brewers yeast and native yeast and bacteria harvested from the air and wildflowers around our brewery. The blend was then refermented with Syrah grapes for about two weeks, transferred off of the fruit, then aged for an additional nine months in oak barrels. After packaging, the beer naturally conditioned for an additional two months prior to release. Altogether, Bière de Syrah is roughly two years old.
Bière de Syrah spent considerably more time aging than most of our other fruited sour beers. This is due to the fact that our Barrel Program Head Adrienne Ballou likes the practice of racking (transferring) beer refermented with wine grapes back into oak barrels for further maturation. Adrienne came to Jester King from the wine world and brought several winemaking techniques with her. According to Adrienne, maturation in oak barrels following fruit refermentation allows the beer to take on more complex characteristics than just bright fruit character and acidity.
The grapes used in the refermentation of Bière de Syrah came from the 2014 harvest in California. We attempt to use native Texas fruit whenever possible, but in this case, we had difficultly sourcing Texas grapes last year. Most of the grapes from the 2014 Texas harvest went to winemakers. Fortunately, we’ve developed some great relationships with wineries in our area, so hopefully this will be the last time we source grapes from California, or anywhere outside of Texas.
Bière de Syrah was brewed with Hill Country well water, barley, wheat, oats, and hops. It was fermented with our mixed culture of brewers yeast and native yeast and bacteria harvested from the Texas Hill Country prior to refermentation with Syrah grapes. It is unfiltered, unpasteurized, and 100% naturally conditioned in bottles, kegs, and casks. Bière de Syrah is 7.3% alcohol by volume, 9 IBU, 3.2 pH at the time of packaging in June 2015, and has a finishing gravity of 1.001 (0.25 degrees Plato).
Bière de Syrah will be released at Jester King when our tasting room opens at 4pm on Friday, July 31st. It will be available to go in 500ml bottles ($16/bottle, limit 1 per customer per day, approximately 2,700 bottles available). A very limited amount of Bière de Syrah will be available by the glass at our tasting room. We’ll be tapping one gravity keg (20L) of Bière de Syrah at 4pm on Friday, 1pm on Saturday, and 1pm on Sunday and selling 4 ounce pours while supplies last. Outside of special events, Bière de Syrah will only be available at our tasting room. The label art was created by our own Josh Cockrell.

26 Degrees of Creating Great Beer in a Friendly Environment

Plans on tap to open craft brewery, 26th Degree Brewing Co., in Pompano Beach.

“If you brew it, they will come.

City leaders think the 26th Degree Brewing Co., a craft beer brewery expected to open next year, will create more of a draw for the city’s hoped-for beach hot spot area than your average stretch of restaurants and shops would.

‘One of the things with a brewery is there’s a high demand for it,’ said Shanna Benson, marketing director for Pompano Beach’s community redevelopment agencies. ‘The craft beer industry in Florida in the last two years has really taken off. It’s the whole shift to buy local as opposed to going to Publix and buying a Budweiser product.’

The 26th Degree Brewing Co. will feature at first about 10 unique brews, which brewer and co-owner Greg Lieberman describes as “balanced and traditional.” The 21,000-square-foot brewery will include a 5,000-square-foot tap room.”

Sudwerk Rye of the Lager is ‘needle in the shelf stack’

DAVIS, Calif. — With craft beer shelves dominated by IPAs, some consumers are looking for something different. That’s why Sudwerk Brewing Co. created Rye of the Lager, an IPL it calls “a needle in the shelf stack.”

“It’s the first rye India Pale Lager available at stores on the West Coast that I’m aware of,” said Trent Yackzan, co-owner of the 25-year-old brewery that is redefining the American lager.

With ales, naturally occurring esters can at times compete against other ingredients, especially in the finish. That’s not the case here. In contrast, lager yeast provides a platform to let the other ingredients shine through. Stone fruit aromatics combine with lemon and pepper flavors, a pleasant blend of spice, and a bold finish. The fruity, subtle flavor from Simcoe and Amarillo hops balances with the dry spiciness of the rye. (7.0 ABV, 70 IBU)

Rye of the Lager is the culmination of more than a year of trial batches, in search of the perfect balance. Last fall’s small batch released at the Sudwerk taproom, The Dock, was so well received, “we knew this was the beer that should become our next year-round West Coast lager,” Yackzan said.

Sudwerk Brewing Co.’s Rye Imperial Pale Lager will be available throughout California, in 22 ounce bottles, starting in early August. Suggested retail price $5.99 to $6.99 per bottle. It’s also available in 15.5 gallon and 5.17 gallon kegs. Sudwerk will host a release party for the beer from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 31  at The Dock, 2001 Second St.

For details on these and other Sudwerk Brewing Co. events, visit http://ift.tt/1fszKWu.

Building on 25 years of family legacy and brewing tradition, Sudwerk Brewing Co. specializes in artisanal craft brews, specifically West Coast craft lagers. Its taproom, The Dock Store, at 2001 Second St., Davis, Calif., is open from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, 4 to 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, and 2 to 8 p.m. on weekends. It offers a rotating menu of experimental and innovative beers, “honest pints” and growler fills, fresh White Labs brewers’ yeast, and good conversation. Learn more at http://sudwerkbrew.com.

CB Craft Brewers “UnPeeled the Secret”

CB Craft Brewers “Unpeeled the Secret”

Company released new line of products after four weeks of intriguing advertisements

Honeoye Falls, NY (July 29, 2015)   After a month of secretive advertising, CB Craft Brewers engaged in a flurry of activity to launch the company’s first new products in more than five years.  Adding to their mega successful Caged Alpha Monkey IPA, on July 9th, the company announced five new products focusing on the marketplaces’ very popular IPA-style beer.  The Primate Pack Family of IPAs consists of three packaged products designed for the supermarket consumer and two draft products designed for bars and restaurants.

The Caged Alpha Monkey is now joined by its little cousin, “Bonobo”, a Session IPA that is light on alcohol and big on flavor and distant relative, “Silverback”, which is a Double IPA.  “Silverback” is a beast of a beer combining large amounts of hops and barley malt giving it a robust, tropical character and weighing in at 9% alcohol by volume.

For the supermarket channel, the brewery launched Bonobo Session IPA in a six-pack and Silverback Double IPA in a four-pack.  As a third offering in this channel, CB launched a twelve-pack called “The Primate Pack” containing 6 Caged Alpha Monkey bottles, 4 Bonobo bottles and 2 Silverback bottles.  Wegmans supermarkets has partnered with CB Craft Brewers on the launch of these products and has buildt large displays in all of their New York stores in support of the Primate Pack launch.  CB brewery staff will be on-site at these stores to provide product sampling.

“With the success of the Caged Alpha Monkey, and the desire of the consumer for more and more diverse India Pale Ale products, it just made sense to add to our portfolio with these beers” said Mike Alcorn, Founder and President of CB Craft Brewers.  “It’s wonderful to be able to gain the support of a great local partner like Wegmans to help us expose the product to the general public.”

An “UnPeeled Secret” celebration was also held at the brewery in Honeoye Falls on Saturday, July 11 with pints available of Caged Alpha Monkey, Silverback and Bonobo.

America’s craft brewers increased their volume production 18% in 2014.  This trend was shown locally as CB Craft Brewers grew their production volume 20% in 2014 with their Caged Alpha Monkey IPA leading the increase.  CB has maintained a 20% volume growth for the past three years.  “In an industry where many craft brewers are achieving growth through expansion into new geographies, CB has stayed true to our roots, achieving our growth in the State of New York,” explains Alcorn.  “The past three years has been totally focused on Western New York, although this year and next we are expanding east.  We intend to keep all distribution to the State of New York, however.  Philosophically, we believe local is an important part of the craft beer culture.”

Staying local isn’t hurting CB, as they ranked the 79th largest microbrewery, by production, out of 1,871 in the U.S.  This statistic does not include the large regional brewers.

“With the total beer market up only 0.5 percent in 2014, craft brewers are key in keeping the overall industry innovative and growing.  This steady growth shows that craft brewing is part of a profound shift in American beer culture — a shift that will help brewers achieve their ambitious goal of 20 percent market share by 2020,” said Bart Watson, Chief Economist, Brewers Association.  “Small and independent brewers are deepening their connection to local beer lovers while continuing to create excitement and attract even more appreciators.”

Based in Boulder, Colo., U.S.A., the Brewers Association (BA) is a not-for-profit trade and educational association for small and craft brewers.  The Brewers Association was established in 2005 by a merger of the Association of Brewers and the Brewers’ Association of America.  Visit the website: http://ift.tt/1JvOpR8 to learn more.

Octopi Brewing announces new Head Brewer Michael Krause, former Head Brewer at O’so Brewing

Waunakee, WI – July 7, 2015 – Octopi Brewing is pleased to announce the addition of Michael Krause to the Octopi team as Head Brewer. With over ten years of experience in the craft brewing industry, Michael brings a wealth of knowledge and an entrepreneurial spirit to the Midwest’s premier contract brewery.

“Michael’s experience and expertise will give Octopi the ability to produce any style of beer at the highest quality level for our clients,” says Isaac Showaki, president of Octopi Brewing. Michael will be leading the operation of a 50 barrel brewhouse from Germany’s Esau & Hueber and a 9,000 bottle-per-hour bottling system from Germany’s KHS.

As Head Brewer and Operations Manager of O’so Brewing, Michael grew O’so from a small operation to one of the largest and most beloved local breweries in the state. Under his direction, the brand increased from 350 barrels in their first year to 7,000 by the time he left, earning O’so the award of “Most Wisconsin Brewery” by Wisconsin Beer.

O’so’s rapid growth lead the company to build a second, larger facility, which makes Octopi the third brewing facility where Mike will lead start-up operations. “I can only imagine the level of beer quality we will be able to create at Octopi’s new state of the art facility”, explains Mike, who holds a degree in Water Resources and Water Chemistry from University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. “I am excited to bring new great beer to the Wisconsin beer drinking community.”

Also joining Octopi’s team as Lead Production Brewer is Sam Green. Originally from Madison, Sam grew his brewing career in Colorado, first with Tommyknocker Brewery in Idaho Springs, and more recently as Lead Brewer for the award-winning Boulder Beer. “I love the science and art of beer”, says Sam. “Brewing is constantly a learning process to which the rabbit hole only gets deeper and deeper. I am excited to bring more great beer to my hometown.”

About Octopi Brewing: Opening later this year, Octopi Brewing will be the premier contract brewery in the Midwest. Octopi’s three main goals are first to produce high quality craft beer on state of the art equipment for established breweries, new beer brands, and hospitality chains. Second, to be the first contract brewery to offer a comprehensive range of services in brand development. Third, to offer unparalleled customer service that caters to the needs of the contracted client. Octopi Brewing is the client’s extra limb, helping them grow their business and letting the public respond to the exceptional offerings that they bring to the market.

Octopi Brewing’s model is simple: Brewing your beer, Propelling your brand

When Three Becomes Four With Mad Science

What happens when you go from three beans to four? The Mad Scientists at Sixpoint have done the experimentation and the results are a new Imperial Porter, aptly named 4BEANS. An evolution of the classic 3BEANS, this new iteration includes improvements on the original formulation with the addition of Madagascar vanilla beans. This modern formula intersects Baltic brewing tradition in a quadrality of roasted, savory, and complex flavors.

While enjoying the collaboration that is 4BEANS, you can unlock a brand new badge from our friends at Sixpoint. Check-in to at least two (2) 4BEANS from Sixpoint between July 30th and August 31st and you’ll unlock the “Sixpoint 4BEANS” badge!

Southern Prohibition’s Crowd Control IPA

After the frenzy that Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee went through to get their hands on a pint or growler of Southern Prohibition Brewing’s limited release, dry hopped IPA, they decided to bring out another batch this August. Crowd Control is an American, hop-forward IPA. Abundant kettle hopping and extensive dry hopping keep the malt in check, while showcasing the flavors and nose of an IPA that can barely be contained. A symphony of grapefruit, pine hops and citrus, it’s a great testament to the true art of dry hopping beer. Drink fresh and don’t resist.

Southern Prohibition Brewing was established in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in 2013. They set out to make beyond excellent craft beer for the Southeast to call its own. Breaking out of the norm of the Mississippi beer culture, SoPro is pumping out a range of hop forward IPAs and barrel aged ales, because you brew the beer you love for the people who love you. Find them online or on facebook or twitter and instagram @soprobrewco.

New Belgium Brewing’s Digital Team Receives “Genius” Status from L2’s Beer Digital IQ Index

New Belgium Brewing has received high praise for its digital team, which L2’s Beer Digital IQ Index® names “genius”. New Belgium is one of three beer brands, and the only craft beer company, to earn the “genius” badge. L2, a benchmarking and education firm, analyzed 67 beer companies for the study. L2 created the Index to serve as the global standard for determining a brand’s digital skills. New Belgium received the distinction for its innovations in e-commerce, social media, its Grand Cru loyalty program, content and paid media, and for creatively merging in-person events and digital activations.

“Although the term ‘genius’ feels a little lofty, we’ll gladly take the high compliment,” said Kevin Darst, digital manager at New Belgium. “The beer world is a crowded place where it can be difficult to stand out, so we try and always meet our fans and friends where they are in the digital world. One way is through incorporating personal experiences and giving fans plenty of ways to interact. It’s definitely a fun and ever evolving world, and I can’t say enough about our team here at New Belgium.”

The “genius” badge is only awarded to companies that score 140 points or more using L2’s methodology, which looks at the company’s site and e-commerce, digital marketing, social media and mobile strategies. Bud Light and Budweiser were the only other brands to receive “genius” status.

New Belgium’s Zealots of Zag Campaign is one example of a highly integrated digital campaign that highlights the brewery’s values and engages brand champions across multiple platforms. Fans are invited to join the digital banter for Zag On by tagging videos and photos, which showcase living in an unconventional but purposeful way, with the hashtag #zagging. There’s also a chance to win a trip to Belgium by creating a  #zagging video with content from coworkers’ 5-year anniversary Belgium trip. All stories submitted may be featured on NewBelgium.com and the brewery’s Beer Mode App, as well as New Belgium’s social channels.

For more information on the 2015 Beer Digital IQ Index visit http://bit.ly/1DjKTmk. Follow New Belgium on Facebook at http://ift.tt/1J19JxJ, on Twitter at http://twitter.com/NewBelgium, or on Instagram at http://ift.tt/1eySpDw.

Natty Greene’s Brewing Co. Sour Season Is Upon Us

Greensboro, NC – This fall, Natty Greene’s Brewing Co. will release four highlights of their Sour Program, including the highly anticipated American Sour 2015. Natty Greene’s Sour Program is lead by Brewmaster Scott Christoffel, who is responsible for the creation and cultivation of Natty Greene’s award winning and nationally recognized Sour Series.

Like all well-rounded sours, each of Natty Greene’s four releases have been aged for a minimum of 18 months. The process is long, but well worth the wait. Natty Greene’s Sour Program started in September of 2006 with the first release of American Sour. Since then, their Sour Series has become a highly sought after release in the craft beer industry.

American Sour is a traditional Flanders Red Ale, created by fermenting Natty Greene’s flagship, Buckshot Amber, with wild yeast and bacteria and aging the ale in oak barrels for two plus years. The result is a sour beer with a tart, dry mouth feel and subtle fruit notes. American Sour 2015 will be released in 750 ml bottles at Natty Greene’s brewhouse in Greensboro on August 19th.

Along with American Sour 2015, Natty Greene’s will also be releasing their Wooden Ladder Kriek Lambic, Hitchpost Gueuze Belgian Styled Lambic, and Clingstone Perzik Lambic.

Wooden Ladder Kriek Lambic is a combination of Natty Greene’s American Sour and 200 pounds of fresh cherries, hand-picked from Montmorency cherry orchard in Virginia. The result is slightly funky beer with a strong cherry aroma but not too much sweetness. Wooden Ladder Kriek Lambic will be released in 500 ml bottles at Natty Greene’s tasting room on August 7th

Clingstone Perzik Lambic is an intensely sour ale brimming with peach aroma. The base is Natty Greene’s Hitchpost Gueuze Lambic. Two hundred pounds of fresh, Eastern North Carolina peaches are then added and the Lambic is allowed to age in oak barrels for an additional 18 months. Clingstone Perzik Lambic will be released in 500 ml bottles at Natty Greene’s tasting room on August 28th.

Hitchpost Gueuze Lambic is a traditional Flemish Style Lambic made with malted barely, raw wheat, and three year old hops. Allowed to ferment in French Oak barrels for 18 months, this beer is intensely sour and slightly acidic with a nice horse-blanket aroma. Hitchpost Gueuze Lambic will be released in 500 ml bottles at Natty Greene’s tasting room on October 9th

For more information about the Sour Series releases, visit http://ift.tt/1LQuoFk

10-Barrel Brewery to open in the Source Hotel, River North District

Ft. Collins, Colo., July 21, 2015New Belgium Brewing is about to let the creative juices flow through a new 10-barrel pilot brewery at The Source Hotel in Denver’s River North District (RiNo). New Belgium will brew on the ground floor of the Source Hotel, with barrel aging on the 8th floor in a rooftop lounge, dubbed “The Woods”, a collaboration between New Belgium and The Source Hotel. “The Woods” will serve New Belgium beers paired with small plates and will include a snack counter and bar, sit-down dining and beer garden. The 8th floor will also include a pool and roof deck with mountain and downtown views.

New Belgium beers originating from the 2,000 square foot brewery will go to establishments in The Source Hotel and expanded market hall. The fifty oak barrels for on-site aging will help expand New Belgium’s sour beer offerings, which the brewery has been producing since 1998. That’s when brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, first introduced aging beer in wood barrels and blending to New Belgium. The brewery’s current cellar in Ft. Collins – also known as the foeder forest – now has 64 French Oak foeders, or barrels, making it one of the most comprehensive wood beer programs in the country.

“After 25 years in Ft. Collins, we’re really excited to get more deeply involved in Colorado’s cultural and political capital,” said Jenn Vervier, director of strategy and sustainability at New Belgium. “We’ve long considered creating a Denver location to bring the New Belgium experience to more of our Colorado fans and to the millions of travelers who visit Denver. RiNo is already a vivid scene with a rich art and craft beer culture, and will soon have great access for bikers and walkers. This small batch brewery will allow us to collaborate with The Woods’ chef and mixologists to create innovative beers, drinks, and pairings you can’t get anywhere else. The Source Hotel and the Zeppelin Development team are the perfect fit.”

Zeppelin Development, the Denver-based boutique development company behind The Source Hotel and expanded market hall will work with the group behind The St. Julien Hotel in Boulder, Colo. to operate The Source Hotel. Construction is set to begin this summer, with an anticipated opening in the first quarter 2017.

Ohio Craft Brewers Association Unveils New Branding, Highlights Rapid Growth

Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio Craft Brewers Association (OCBA), the nonprofit guild that works to support local craft brewers through advocacy, marketing, events and educational opportunities, is unveiling a new brand identity to celebrate the tremendous growth of the industry. Ohio’s craft brewing industry has come a long way in the last few years with the number of breweries in our state more than doubling from 58 in 2012 to 130 and counting today. The OCBA enlisted award-winning Columbus-based agency Fahlgren Mortine to assist in rebranding the organization and helping to raise the profile of both the brewers guild and the outstanding beverages produced by its members.

A critical component of the brand makeover is the introduction of new logos for both the OCBA as an organization and its consumer facing product, Ohio Craft Beer. The new branding will be evident in all visual representations of the organization including on its website, social media accounts and all organizational materials and publications. The wider Ohio Craft Beer branded logos will be available to OCBA members for use on their labels and packaging as well.

“We are thrilled with the distinctive new logo produced by Fahlgren Mortine,” said Mary MacDonald, executive director of the OCBA. “The bold design has an Arts and Crafts aura befitting our handmade beer and incorporates symbolic grains and hops, key ingredients to Ohio’s craft brewers. The logo, combined with the compelling new platform, gives us the tools to communicate the contributions of Ohio’s craft brewers locally, regionally and nationally.”

Said Eric Bean, president of the OCBA, “This new brand identity will help unite and propel Ohio Craft Beer and the state’s individual brewers as we continue to grow regionally and nationally. We’re proud to have been part of the process, and look forward to continuing to watch Ohio evolve into a key player in the craft beer industry.”

Jpegs of the new logos are available at the following Dropbox link:

http://ift.tt/1VJPMRl

Founded in 2007, the Ohio Craft Brewers Association is a nonprofit guild that exists to promote and preserve Ohio’s unified craft brewing industry. We aspire to be recognized as the industry leader for preserving the art of making high-quality, unique craft beer; to serve as the unified voice for craft brewers across the state; to advocate on behalf of the Ohio Craft beer industry; to contribute to systemic, local community development by driving economic and job growth, while creating experiences that bring people together; and to serve as a beacon for local production and manufacturing through craft beer, resulting in diverse product choices for consumers. Sun King Brewery To Can 2015 Official Beer of Gen Con

INDIANAPOLIS (July 20, 2015) Sun King Brewing has returned as a Promotional Partner for Gen Con 2015, brewing an official beer specifically for the convention for the fourth consecutive year. As part of this agreement, Sun King again will operate an outdoor, ages 21 and older, beer garden, and host a tapping “kickoff” party on the evening of July 29 in Indianapolis.

“Gen Con is such an exciting and fun time in Indianapolis and every year it gets better,” said Clay Robinson, Co-Founder, Owner, and Vice President of Marketing at Sun King Brewing. “This year will be the first time that the official beer of Gen Con will be released in its very own, limited edition can! Gamers, of legal drinking age, will now be able to take home, savor and share a little bit of the excitement in every can.”

While attendees have previously enjoyed Sun King’s official Gen Con beers through tapped kegs on-site at Gen Con and via local bar and restaurant partners, 2015 will mark the first year that attendees will be able to purchase the Gen Con beer in commemorative canned format. Introducing: Meet the Brewer - via GABF

New in 2015, the Great American Beer Festival will dedicate roughly 30,000 square feet of hall space to a new section called Meet the Brewer. Just under 100 breweries will comprise this area, and each brewery’s booth will be staffed entirely, exclusively, by their employees.

“Meet the Brewer is another great opportunity for passionate beer fans to start conversations with brewers, learn more about their beers and talk shop,” said Nancy Johnson, event director at the Brewers Association. “We expect Meet the Brewer to be particularly popular with the homebrewing crowd.”

The new section occupies the heart of Hall B, which is a new addition to the festival. The area will feature a wide promenade between two rows of brewery booths, with lights strung overhead.

“Ever since the first festival, in 1982, one of the best things about GABF has been the personal interactions attendees have with their craft brewing heroes, and Meet the Brewer builds on that long tradition,” said Johnson.

Randolph & Transmitter Brewing Launch Custom Beer

Randolph Group, a NYC-based hospitality group with locations in downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn, has partnered with Transmitter Brewing, a nanobrewery located in Long Island City, to create a custom beer that will be exclusively sold at Randolph Beer and Randolph Brooklyn for a limited time beginning July 2nd.

Randolph Beer’s Certified Cicerone, Kyle Kensrue, approached Transmitter Brewing with the idea of creating a Randolph exclusive beer. Located in his neighborhood, Kyle has become a fan of the brewery and his included Transmitter beers in previous events.

The exclusive beer –R1 (abv: 6.3%) – is a dry-hopped Saison brewed, a beer trend for summer 2015, with malted barley, wheat and rye. The R1 is generously dry-hopped with a proprietary hop called TNT, giving it aromas of intense sweet fruits, red berries and citrus with a touch of caramel and green fruits. The custom Saison is a smooth malt body with bright aromatic hops lifting from the glass with a dry finish and a light amber color. This dry-hopped Saison beer was chosen as it’s a current trend in the beer industry and it’s an approachable, enjoyable beer for the Randolph clientele.

Brewers Association Reports Big Gains for Small and Independent Brewers

Mid-Year Measurement Reveals Sustained Craft Brewing Industry Growth

Boulder, CO • July 27, 2015—The craft brewing industry has continued a strong pace of growth in the first half of 2015, according to new mid-year data released by the Brewers Association (BA)—the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American craft brewers. American craft beer production volume increased 16 percent during the first half of the year.

From January through the end of June 2015, approximately 12.2 million barrels of beer were sold by craft brewers, up from 10.6 million barrels during the first half of 2014.

“Industry growth is occurring in all regions and stemming from a mix of sources including various retail settings and a variety of unique brewery business models,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “The continued growth of small and independent brewers illustrates that additional market opportunities and demand are prevalent, although competition in the sector is certainly growing and the need for brewers to differentiate and produce world class high quality beer is more important than ever.”

As of June 30, 2015, 3,739 breweries were operating in the U.S, an increase of 699 breweries over the same time period of the previous year. Additionally, there were 1,755 breweries in planning. Craft brewers currently employ an estimated 115,469 full-time and part-time workers, many of which are manufacturing jobs, contributing significantly to the U.S. economy.

“More and more Americans are discovering the joys of enjoying fresh beer produced by their neighborhood brewery. By supporting local, small and independent craft breweries, beer lovers are gradually returning the United States to the system of localized beer production that existed for much of our nation’s history,” added Watson.

Craft brewer definition: An American craft brewer is small, independent and traditional. Small: Annual production of 6 million barrels of beer or less (approximately 3 percent of U.S. annual sales). Beer production is attributed to the rules of alternating proprietorships. Independent: Less than 25 percent of the craft brewery is owned or controlled (or equivalent economic interest) by an alcoholic beverage industry member that is not itself a craft brewer. Traditional: A brewer that has a majority of its total beverage alcohol volume in beers whose flavor derives from traditional or innovative brewing ingredients and their fermentation. Flavored malt beverages (FMBs) are not considered beers.
