Lakefront Brewery to Release Nation’s First Organic Barrel Aged Barley Wine

MILWAUKEE, WI (March 31, 2015) — Lakefront Brewery, Inc. announced it will release a whiskey barrel-aged version of their Beer Line Organic Barley Wine in April. The Brewery claims it is the first USDA-certified Organic barrel-aged barley wine in the United States.

The robust brew (14 percent ABV), held for 18 months in USDA-certified Organic rye whiskey barrels sourced from Catoctin Creek Distillery in Purcellville, Virginia, is Lakefront’s “most ambitious release in our 27 year history,” commented Chris Johnson, the Brewery’s Director of Business Development. Johnson stated that he believes Lakefront will change the brewing industry’s and consumers’ perception of organic beer.

In 1996, Lakefront Brewery created the first USDA-certified Organic beer in the United States, Organic E.S.B. “At that time, there were few organic malt and hop varieties available, so that limited the number of possible organic beer styles,” Johnson remarked, “I think past impression of organic beers is that they are ‘boring’.” He explained, “Now, there’s much more ingredient diversity, so breweries have a lot more to work with. We challenged ourselves to push the boundaries, and create a really unique and special all-organic beer.”

Johnson went on to talk about an employee sampling discussion prior to packaging the beer, “we were overjoyed: everybody’s smiles got bigger and bigger with each sip.” Johnson continued, “We’ve received some positive initial customer feedback, and the response has been that not only is it the best organic beer they’ve ever had, it’s one of the best beers they’ve had, overall. We couldn’t be more pleased with the final result,” he concluded.

The Beer Line Aged in Organic Whiskey Oak Barrels is a limited 22-ounce bottle: approximately 3,100 bottles were produced. The Brewery projects it to hit retailer shelves during the first week of April.

Lakefront Brewery, Inc. was started in 1987 and is celebrating its 27th anniversary this year. The brewery currently produces 45,000 barrels of beer per year and distributes its products to 36 states, Canada and Japan. Lakefront Brewery, Inc. was the first brewery to brew a government-approved, gluten-free beer, New Grist. For more information, visit http://ift.tt/1f6umXx or call (414) 372-8800.

Heavy Seas Announces Lecture Series for Local Brewers

BALTIMORE, MD — This spring, Heavy Seas Beer will hold a series of educational beer classes at its brewery in Baltimore, MD. The goal is to further educate and enlighten the Heavy Seas staff while giving other companies the opportunity to participate.

According to Brewmaster, Chris Leonard, “As Baltimore’s largest brewery, we at Heavy Seas Beer feel a responsibility to our colleagues to take a leadership role whenever possible in facilitating education, research and collaboration. In that spirit, we are hosting a lecture series for other local brewers on technical brewing. Our first session on Saturday, March 14th had staff from Mully’s Brewery, Ruddy Duck, Manor Hill, Union Brewing, Brookville Beer Farm, Baying Hound, OC Brewing, and Brewer’s Art.”

Leonard also states, “We have a much more complete laboratory facility than most, if not all, of our smaller brethren. So, we intend to begin offering some lab services – microbiological testing, IBU, ABV, and SRM (color) measurement, and bottle DO (dissolved oxygen) measurement. We have some sophisticated equipment (Anton Parr alcolizer, spectrophotometer, autoclave, incubator, etc.) that most small breweries do not. Our goal is to offer these services at “cost”, basically, with the goal of helping other local breweries manage/track/control their products in a manner similar to larger breweries.”

Heavy Seas is thrilled to be a part of such an important initiative to support the local brewing community. Stay tuned for the dates of upcoming classes.

Cape May Brewing Company Wins New Jersey’s Brewery of the Year for 2015

Cape May Brewing Company is New Jersey’s Brewery of the Year for 2015, according to the recent New York International Beer Competition. The start-up’s light and refreshing Tower 23, a brew named for a local World War II lookout tower, also took home a title — German Style Sour Ale of the Year — besting entries from across the nation. “Sour beers are the new frontier,” says Cape May Brew Master Brian Hink. Case in point: CMB is the only one in the state making them.

The New York International Beer Competition, judged entirely by trade professionals, prides itself on being discriminatory. According to their website: “We are not a medal factory. We take great pride in that less than 50% of those who submit win a medal.”

The accolades bring the 2015 award total for CMB up to five. In January, their Coastal Evacuation beer won a silver medal in the category of Imperial IPA at the Best of Craft Beer Awards held in Bend, Oregon – commonly referred to as “IPA country.” The Tower 23 earned silver in the Berline Weisse group, and CMB’s most popular pint, Devil’s Reach, took home bronze in the Belgian Golden Strong Ale class.

Chuckanut Brewery Taps Unusual Baltic Porter

It’s not often Chuckanut Brewery makes their Baltic Porter but this year their unusual Baltic Porter will be tapped in the bar at 601 W. Holly St., Bellingham on April 3 at 5:30 p.m. This is a rich lager beer, even though the name is Porter (an ale). The inspiration for the Baltic Porter comes from those brewers living in the Baltic Sea area who were inspired by the Imperial Russian Stouts and English Porters.

Chuckanut’s Baltic Porter is lagered for more than nine weeks at cold temperatures creating a smooth, rich beer full of roast malt and dark sugar flavors. Full bodied with hints of chocolate, dried fruits, and coffee this complex lager is easy to drink. This year’s Chuckanut Baltic Porter has 8.2% ABV and IBU’s of 35. A great beer to accompany roasted meats and sausages the malt sweetness also makes this a great dessert beer, especially with anything chocolate!

Cape May Brewery’s New Brewhouse Has Arrived

Around 11:42am yesterday morning, Cape May Brewery’s new 30-barrel brewhouse came rolling onto the premises, her tanks a-gleaming, after completing a 2,800-mile journey across the country.

“People asked me some strange questions along the way,” said driver David Cook, who transported the 8,000-pound system on a 53-foot trailer. “The weirdest was: ‘What’s a brewery?’ I just walked away from those folks. It ain’t for making popcorn!”

That, it ain’t.

In addition to two support tanks, five 60-barrel fermenting tanks, and two 60-barrel bright tanks already in place, the custom-built system from respected manufacturer Premier Stainless is three vessels – a mash tun (where malted barley is mixed with hot water), a boil kettle (where hops are added for aroma and flavor), and a whirlpool (to help clarify the resulting brew).

The latter is not a necessary piece for the making of beer… just an exciting one. It will allow the CMB team to begin work on a new batch before the previous has finished brewing, which should help maintain the start-up’s trajectory — CMB is on track to become New Jersey’s largest producer of craft beer. The new equipment will produce 15,000 barrels its first year in operation, with room to grow as tanks are added to the arsenal.

“I feel like a kid at Christmas,” said CMB President Ryan Krill, before joking: “We’ll hang on to this system for just a little while.” But, those who’ve been paying attention have reason to take him on his word.

This is the fifth time the operation has upgraded its brewing apparatus in four years; Krill and his business partner/college buddy Chris Henke started in 2011 with a 12-gallon system fashioned from scrap metal, just enough to service their one client.

But now, with 270 accounts throughout Jersey and Pennsylvania, they’ve outgrown their 1,500-square-foot space at the Cape May Airport. While they’re hanging on to it — and the 15-barrel brewhouse that’s been churning out their award-winning recipes – they’ve taken over a warehouse, also at the Cape May Airport. Here they’ve installed a bottling line, a new mill, and now, this impressive brew house. It’s the final piece of CMB’s expansion puzzle.

At least for now.

Edible Films: Garrett Oliver, Brooklyn Brewery

In this episode of Edible Films (produced by Edible Brooklyn ), Brooklyn Brewery Brewmaster Garrett Oliver shares his thoughts on craft beer as it relates to American food today. For Oliver, beer is food, and he considers himself to be the chef of the brewery.

Here are three powerful quotes from the video that summarize Oliver’s view of the rise (or renaissance) of American craft beer and food.

  • “To me, beer is really a part of the story of American food. If you look at the way craft beer has risen over the last 20 years, it tracks exactly with olive oil, cheese, bread, ice cream—everything that’s made a comeback from an industrialized food system.”

  • “Beer is simply a part of the renaissance of American food.”

  • “Industrialized food and industrialized beer was weird. We had 400 years of brewing in the Americas and only 50-60 years was this weird little spot where we had flavorless beer that was made by machines. And now, we’re recovering.”

Now Open: The Grand Canyon Brewing Company’s Newly Renovated Taproom in Williams, AZ

Spring has sprung in the cozy town of Williams, AZ. Just in time for warmer weather, thirsty craft beer lovers can grab a pint right from the source. The newly renovated and reopened Grand Canyon Brewing Company taproom features 16 different tap handles including its own core and seasonal brews and a few guest beers – all from local breweries.

The taproom is located within the Grand Canyon Brewing Company’s brew house at 233 W. Route 66 in Williams, AZ. Copper tanks, stainless steel fermenters and the smell of bubbling yeast and fresh hops fill the air as the brewing team works to create their award winner beers.

In the past, patrons could enjoy a pint at the neighboring Cruisers Café while grabbing a bite to eat. While service at Cruisers will continue, the taproom offers a more intimate experience for craft beer fans to connect directly with the brewing process, talk to the brewers and see the action happening as they sip from their frothy pints. The taproom will also offer growler service as well as bottles and cans to take home or along on your Grand Canyon adventure.

“We’re excited to reopen the taproom and be able to reconnect with our customers on a personal level. The taproom is a place for locals and tourists to stop by, enjoy a cold beer and learn about the culture of the Grand Canyon Brewing Company,” said Alexander Phillips, director of sales and brand ambassador for the Grand Canyon Brewing Company.

Odell Brewing’s Tree Shaker Imperial Peach IPA Returns in Four Pack

Brewery kicks of Colorado Beer Week with Colorado Peaches

Fort Collins, CO. – On March 20, 2015, Odell Brewing will celebrate the return of Tree Shaker Imperial Peach IPA. The beloved brew, a former cellar series offering, makes a comeback in a new package configuration – a four pack.

“Tree Shaker is a brewery and customer favorite,” said brewing manager Bill Beymer. “Our team decided we’d like to see more of it this spring, and a four pack was a great option for growing this amazing beer.”

Tree Shaker is brewed with pureed Colorado peaches. The Imperial IPA is a bright golden hue, with a floral and fruity aroma. Familiar citrusy hop notes are balanced by a subtle sweetness from the local peaches.

Odell Brewing will celebrate the release of Tree Shaker as it kicks off Colorado Craft Beer Week in the brewery’s tap room March 20 – 22. Guests can enjoy samples of the brew all weekend, local food truck offerings including Tree Shaker infused specials from Common-Link on Saturday, and live music by Porcelain City on Sunday afternoon. The brewery will also offer special cheese pairing plates from The Welsh Rabbit (available for purchase while supplies last).

Tree Shaker Imperial Peach IPA will be available in four packs April – June throughout the brewery’s eleven state distribution footprint.
