TRVE Brewing Releases First Beer from The Acid Temple – Life’s Trade

This Friday, July Third, TRVE Brewing will unveil the first bottled offering from the now fully operational Acid Temple. Over a year in the making, we’re completely elated to have our new brewery dedicated to wilds, sours, and all other funk-forward beers up and running. Being able to share this libation with the world is both the end of a long and brutal buildout, and the beginning of a new era for TRVE.
With this beer we are paying homage to tradition with our grain bill and by fermenting in puncheons. We used multiple yeast strains and then blended from the puncheons to produce the final beer. The respect for tradition comes through in the aroma and flavors presented in this beer – we consider this to be one of the most classic beers we’ve produced to date.
This beer – and The Acid Temple as a whole – represents a lot of dedication and soul just like the album it’s named after. And, as cheesy as it sounds, this work really has become our life’s trade. The barrel-aged and sour beers we have been able to produce until this point act as a prologue to what is to come. We thoroughly expect to exceed even our own expectations of what is possible now that we have the increased capacity for projects such as these.

Farm Breweries: When Local Means Your Own Backyard

Freshness is always an important aspect in deciding which groceries or menu items to select, and more recently consumers are focusing on not just fresh ingredients, but local as well.

In order to adapt to this new consumer taste and use it as a tool to create truly unique beer, breweries are creating new strategies to get a firmer grasp on the production of their ingredients, either by partnering with local farmers or by bringing production in-house. By directly controlling the production of ingredients like hops and grains, farm breweries can produce beer offerings that cannot be had anywhere else.

Proximity to Ingredients

Bringing production of raw materials in-house can be a difficult and costly endeavor for a brewery. For the most part, barley and hops, the primary ingredients in most craft beers, are grown in specific regions of the country suited best for the crops. Farmers in these areas can supply the demands of brewers and even deliver fresh ingredients, but not many breweries can consider them local ingredients. Barley and hops don’t thrive in all climates and it makes the most sense financially to grow the crops with the highest yield, so many farmers are reluctant to invest without a guarantee.

Dream Pumpkins from Rogue Farms for their Pumpkin Patch Ale and Pumpkin Savior

In order to bring about change in the industry and provide support for their communities, many breweries are finding alternative ways to source their main ingredients.

Breweries like Rogue Ales and Stone Brewing Co., are purchasing or leasing farmland to produce their own hops and barley. This way they can support their communities by guaranteeing farmer’s their business or creating jobs on farms of their own.

But it’s not only large regional breweries with nationwide distribution that are taking charge of the production of their ingredients, many small brewing operations are also finding ways source locally. Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery in Goochland, Va., and Milkhouse Brewery at Stillpoint Farm in Mount Airy, Md., are perfect examples of farm to glass brewing establishments.

Farm operations like these allow breweries to produce beers with unique ingredients that no other brewery has access to. For example, Rogue’s “Rogue Farms” series of beers are produced exclusively with ingredients grown on their own farm, including the 7 Hop IPA, which contains every hop that they grow and their proprietary Dare and Risk grains.

Collectively Sourcing Raw Materials

Hopshire Farm and Brewery in Freeville, NY, has been a hop farm for years providing their hops to area breweries, but in 2013 they took advantage of a new New York legislative bill and became the fifth licensed farm brewery in the state.

“We even have brewer’s barley and different hop varieties growing. We’re not the only ones involved, hence the community effort. Our region of Pennsylvania is very lucky to have countless natural farmers growing wonderful variety of different fruits, veggies, and even hops. We’ve also been witness to a new local craft malt house open in the south eastern PA area. Together, the revolution continues to dig in deeper.” – Saucony Creek Brewing Co.

Saucony Creek Brewing Co. in Kutztown, Pa., is part of a union of local farmers who work together to supply each other with the ingredients that they each need to produce their craft beers. They cannot always produce every single ingredient necessary, but want to set an example for the industry and show what can be reached through a deep level of collaboration.

There is a growing movement among craft brewers, big and small, to produce their beer from beginning to end—starting in the dirt. Brewers want to have more and more control over the process so that the line of beers that they offer are completely unique. Sustainability also plays a role in motivating companies to limit their impact, and cutting down on transportation of ingredients into the brewery is a significant way for breweries to reduce their footprint.

For a craft brewery, it all boils down to supporting the communities that support your business and offering the most unique and highest quality beers possible.

America’s Beeriest Beach Towns 2015

Beaches and brews are two of the great staples of summer vacation.

Last year we published the feature “5 of America’s Beeriest Beach Towns” and received an overwhelming response from our readers. The story no doubt struck a chord with all those among us who love the smell of the ocean, the sound of the surf and the taste of a fresh beer.

With the dramatic rise in popularity of flavorful, hand-crafted ales and lagers produced by our country’s small and independent craft brewers, even remote coastal towns now offer plenty of breweries, brewpubs and bottle shops.

And so, for the summer of 2015, we present five more places to seek out for a beery, beachside getaway:

Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor, Maine

Everyone should experience the New England coast in summer at some point in their lives—the colonial history and architecture, the seafood, the scenery. And perhaps no place on the eastern seaboard surpasses the beauty of Bar Harbor.

Perched on Mount Desert Island, at the gateway to Acadia National Park, the historic resort town is brimming with charm and gorgeous natural landscapes. Acadia’s Sand Beach, which stands out from Maine’s otherwise craggy coastline, is a big draw—despite the water’s consistent 55-degree temperature.

“It’s gorgeous, with the mountains on both sides and the beach right in the middle,” says Alf Anderson, an events and development associate with the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a little cold, but it’s gorgeous.”

Oh, and the beer. Beer has always been a part of colonial life, and Maine certainly has been ahead of the curve on the American craft scene, going back to the first craft boom of the 1990s.

Today in Bar Harbor, Atlantic Brewing Co. leads the way. Anderson says the brewery’s tasting room is the place to be on a Saturday afternoon, though as the largest of Bar Harbor’s breweries, Atlantic’s beers are “sort of everywhere in town.” That includes the wildly popular Bar Harbor Blueberry Ale, a Maine classic.

“I’m not a fruit-beer guy,” Anderson concedes, “and I had one the other day for the first time, because I had been holding out, thinking it was probably too sweet. But it’s actually a really nice ale with a little bit of a blueberry backbone to it. It was a really nice, drinkable beer.”

Built on the grounds of a 19th-century Maine farmstead, Atlantic’s 10-acre property includes the brewery’s production facility, tasting room and Mainely Meat BBQ eatery. Tours are offered three times daily during the summer season.

Bar Harbor, Maine

Thirsty Whale and McKay’s Public House are among the many go-to bars in Bar Harbor, each with a solid local craft selection. Also check out Seafood Ketch, a waterfront restaurant across the island in Bass Harbor, is also worth a stop—not just for the local brews, but also the inspiring sunsets.

Not into the summer crowds? Visit Bar Harbor in the fall for sublime weather and enjoy the 20th annual Brewfest on Oct. 10 and 11 as part of Acadia’s Oktoberfest.

No matter when you visit, though, Bar Harbor’s recipe remains the same: “Gorgeous views, delicious lobster and cold, local beer,” said Anderson.

Cannon Beach/Seaside, Oregon

oregon

Seaside, Oregon

Last year we featured Pacific City, Ore., as one of our beeriest beach towns, largely because of the stunning setting of one of Oregon’s most acclaimed breweries, Pelican Pub & Brewery.

This time we travel just a bit further up the magnificent Pacific coast on Highway 101, where neighbor towns Cannon Beach and Seaside also play host to some pretty awesome spots to drink craft beer on the beach. While inland cities such as Bend, Hood River and Portland undoubtedly steal the beer spotlight in Oregon, it’s not hard to sniff out some excellent craft beer by the sea.

Jeff Kilday has owned the Wine and Beer Haus in Seaside for 16 years. In that time, it’s grown from a 100-bottle shop to a selection of more than 500 beers—and still it doesn’t seem like enough.

“As Portland groups come out here for vacation, there’s more and more need for beer. I think we’ve seen more people come to the coast that want good beers and need more choice,” says Kilday, who also has four rotating Pacific Northwest taps and says he sells boatloads of Worthy Brewing’s Worthy Imperial IPA from Bend.

Seaside is a bustling family resort in the summer. Best known for its promenade, which stretches for a mile and a half down the sandy beach, it’s the only town on the Oregon coast with a carousel, arcade and fun zone.

Besides the Wine and Beer Haus, check out Seaside Brewing Co., housed in the town’s 100-year-old former City Jail Building. And hope that the sought-after Black Dynamite is flowing on draft—it’s an 11-percent, 80-IBU stout made with whole vanilla beans, house-roasted organic cacao nibs and a series of specialty malts and oats, then aged in Oregon-distilled bourbon barrels.

Less than a block from the beach is another cool beer spot, U Street Pub & Eatery, which has 15 taps including sours and a nitro version of North Coast’s Old Rasputin Imperial Stout from Fort Bragg, Calif.

The more upscale Cannon Beach is a great place to stroll through art galleries or take a hike at beautiful Ecola State Park in between beers. The town also boasts its own brewery, Bill’s Tavern and Brewhouse, featuring the tasty Duck Dive Pale Ale and some interesting specialty brews such as Blackberry Beauty.

oregon

Cannon Beach, Oregon | Haystack Rock

Need some plumbing or garden supplies while on vacation? Then head to the Cannon Beach Hardware and Public House, which Kilday says has “its own little unique personality.” It would have to, as a restaurant, bar and hardware store all rolled into one.

By next spring, Cannon Beach will also be home to Pelican Pub & Brewery’s third location. Like the original brewery in Pacific City, the venue will have views of an offshore Haystack Rock that rises more than 200 feet from the water.

Honolulu, Hawaii

hawaii

As if anyone needed more incentive to take in the turquoise waters, pristine beaches and volcanic mountains of the “Aloha State,” Hawaii’s beer culture is on fire as well.

This is especially true in the capital of Honolulu on Oahu’s south shore, where the iconic Waikiki crescent beach is surrounded as much by craft beer as by swaying palm trees. Frothy surf abounds, for sure, and so do glasses of pilsner, saison and pale ale.

“It’s a really exploding beer scene there,” says Tim Golden, a Hawaii resident who launched the website BeerInHawaii.com. “I mean, it’s catching up with the rest of the country, but it’s there.”

No less than four breweries have opened in Honolulu in the past year alone. Waikiki Brewing Co., located within a quarter-mile of the beach, is housed in one of Cheeseburger Restaurant’s unused banquet rooms. The beers range from the lighter blonde ales and hefeweizens one would expect in the tropics, to an IPA and even a black strap molasses porter—indicative of the wide range of styles now found on the island.

The man behind Honolulu’s sudden craft movement is Troy Terorotua, a chef who moved to Hawaii from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 1997. Terorotua became the beer buyer for Whole Foods Kahala, where he began to bring some quality U.S. craft and international brews into the state, and in May 2012 he opened Hawaii’s first true craft-beer bar: Real, a Gastropub.

Terorotua launched Brew’d Craft Pub exactly two years later, and Golden says the two craft-centric bars form the “cornerstones” of Honolulu’s beer scene. The lineup at Brew’d includes such mainland stalwarts as Ballast Point, Crooked Stave, Hill Farmstead and Jolly Pumpkin.

hawaii

Meanwhile, the beaches on Hawaii’s other stunning islands are brimming with beer as well, and Golden says the various beer scenes of the archipelago feed off each other’s energy.

If you’re on your way to Kona this fall for the Ironman Triathlon World Championships, don’t miss Big Island Brewhaus. The brewery scored big in Denver last year with a Great American Beer Festival (GABF) bronze medal for Golden Sabbath, an 8-percent Belgian-style golden strong ale, and a bronze for both Overboard IPA and Golden Sabbath at the World Beer Cup.

“They’ve got Mexican food there, and the Overboard IPA is very, very good,” says Ironman veteran Stefan Judex of Port Jefferson, N.Y. “So is the Red Giant Ale.”

San Luis Obispo, CaliforniaSan Luis Obispo, California

Is it any wonder a city dubbed “the happiest place in America” also happens to be soaked in craft beer?

Perhaps it’s no coincidence that SLO earned that moniker—from none other than Oprah—right around the start of the central California coast’s brewing boom. There was a time when tourists taking in the dramatic coastal scenery of Highway 1 had to veer 30 minutes inland to visit the renowned Firestone Walker Brewing Co. Now, however, “beercationers” can enjoy barrells of other breweries throughout SLO County.

“Our region is extremely diverse,” says Kylie Jepsen of Visit San Luis Obispo County, “as are the locations of our craft breweries.”

It all still begins with Firestone Walker Brewing Co. in Paso Robles. Though smack dab in the middle of wine country, the three-time GABF Mid-size Brewery of the Year has become a destination of its own. But it’s not alone anymore—two miles south, check out Barrelhouse Brewing Co., whose half-acre beer garden features a flowing waterfall, picnic tables and a bandstand on the back of a vintage flatbed truck. Barrelhouse is planning a major expansion, and is also is set to open a new 2,000-square-foot, speakeasy-style taproom in the heart of San Luis Obispo’s historic downtown.

San Luis Obispo, California

Speaking of SLO itself, beer is springing up everywhere. Seek out the IPA from Tap It Brewing, a 2012 GABF gold medal-winner, and check out Creekside Brewing Co. and Central Coast Brewing, just 10 minutes from the beach.

Tiny Bang the Drum Brewery, which bills itself as the smallest brewery on the Central Coast, produces craft beer and mead on a 15-gallon system—and also, naturally, offers drums for patrons to bang on. Visitors to the funky tasting room can also enjoy a variety of music performers, food trucks, charity fundraisers and craft fairs.

Want a couple pints closer to the sand and surf? The Libertine Pub in Morro Bay specializes in house-brewed, barrel-aged wild ales—including a tart saison brewed with local seawater, hops grown on-site and volcanic rock from the iconic Morro Rock. Shell Beach Brewhouse, with 30 draft beers and nine flat-screen TVs, is also within walking distance of the beach.

For takeout, California Fresh Market in Pismo Beach carries a large selection of local craft brews. Santa Barbara-based Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. is slated to open another brewery and 6,500-square-foot taproom just a few miles away in Arroyo Grande this summer. In nearby Grover Beach, the beer garden at ManRock Brewing features a giant Jenga set, outdoor heaters and a wood-fired brick pizza oven.

Need more guidance? The recently formed Central Coast Brewers Consortium now puts out a brewery map, and Hop On Beer Tours will take you to all these places via a pub-style limo bus.

For festival-goers, the Seven Sisters Craft Beer & Music Fest will take place July 1-12 at El Chorro Regional Park and Campground on Highway 1 between Morro Bay and SLO, while the Sunset SAVOR the Central Coast food and wine fest, Sept. 26-27 at the historic Santa Margarita Ranch, devotes a courtyard to local brews.

Wilmington, North Carolina

Wilmington, North Carolina

North Carolina is one of the fastest-growing craft beer states in the country, and while Charlotte, Raleigh and Asheville in particular continue to grab all the headlines, no city in the past year has been more responsible for the Tar Heel State’s rapid ascension than Wilmington.

Flytrap Brewing, which takes its name from the carnivorous plant that grows in the wild within a 70-mile radius of Wilmington, is among the five new breweries that have opened in Wilmington since 2014. Flytrap’s hearty lineup features sours and saisons, while the adventurous Wilmington Brewing Co. offers a wide spectrum of beers from the Amarillo Saison to Coffee Porter and Breakfast Stout.

These newcomers have joined Wilmington mainstay Front Street Brewery, which is celebrating 20 years in 2015. Front Street, whose Kelsie Cole was one of North Carolina’s first female head brewers, still anchors the city’s beer landscape with three daily tours and full-service restaurant.

There are also many other beer choices within the city limits and on nearby island beaches. Less than seven miles away in Wrightsville Beach, Lighthouse Beer & Wine features more than 400 bottled beers and drafts such as Olde Hickory’s Death by Hops and Wicked Weed’s Wicked City, which can be enjoyed in an outdoor beer garden. The shop also hosts the annual Lighthouse Beer & Wine Festival in late October.

If you’re stocking up in town for a trip to the beach, Bombers Bev Co. bottle shop has now joined Wilmington Brewing Co. as options for crowlers—those handy 32-ounce take-home cans.

Wilmington, North Carolina

Bombers, one of numerous bottle shops in the greater Wilmington area, is also where the new Port City Brew Bus begins its tours. Brew Bus co-owner Jeremy Tomlinson is stoked about Wilmington’s sudden craft beer renaissance. He says a seventh Wilmington-area brewery is expected to open soon, followed by a few more by the end of the year.

“It’s such a new scene,” Tomlinson says, which means that there hasn’t been much time to spread Wilmington’s new reputation as a craft beer vacation spot. But with summer as the city’s tourist “prime-time”, he’s confident that word will get around. “We hope that, if not this year then by next year, we will be—for lack of a better term—Asheville on the coast.”

Vive la French Fry! Saint Arnold Puts Side Dish in the Spotlight

Brewery Will Give Houston’s Best Frites EntrĆ©e Status for National French Fry Day

HOUSTON, June 30, 2015 – Saint Arnold Brewing Co. (www.saintarnold.com), the oldest craft brewery in Texas, believes the lowly potato deserves some love and attention. For National French Fry Day on July 13th, Saint Arnold will remove everything else from its menu for a special French fry-athon, expected to attract hundreds of french fry devotees.

What: National French Fry Day Celebration
When: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday July 13th
Where: Saint Arnold Brewery, 2000 Lyons Ave., Houston
Media Pass: RSVP to dan@dpkpr.com or call 832.467.2904 for media pass

Saint Arnold Executive Chef Ryan Savoie prepares more than 18 tons of hand cut frites each year. His painstaking process involves cutting half-pound russet potatoes (about one serving per potato), washing them several times in room temperature water, blanching at 250 degrees until golden brown, then completely cooling and drying each fry before a final cook at 360 degrees when ready to serve. After a shake of salt and pepper, the result is the best french fry in Houston. It is perfectly crunchy, doesn’t need an accompaniment and remains enjoyable even as it cools.

“People may think it’s strange, but I really enjoy cutting and washing the potatoes,” said Savoie. “It’s the first thing I do every day and one of the last things I do – it’s relaxing and cathartic. The common mistake people make is thinking that a soggy fry results from under-cooking. It is almost always the result of under-washing. Starch cooks faster than the potato itself, so washing the starch off will let the potato cook properly, which promotes crunch.”

For National French Fry Day, Savoie plans a world-class spread of accompaniments, including chili, spicy cheese curds, guacamole, bacon bits, Million Island dressing, jalapenos, Santo Queso, garlic aioli and, of course, ketchup. Beer and a commemorative mug also are included. Tickets to the event are $20. Visit http://ift.tt/1NsFfo8 for more information.

Of course, Saint Arnold isn’t only known for having Houston’s best french fries; it also creates flavorful craft beer that has been judged among the best in America and the world. In fact, each of Saint Arnold’s 13 year-round beers has won a medal at either the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) or the World Beer Cup. The brewery’s most highly decorated beer, Saint Arnold Summer Pils has won six GABF medals. It is currently available in stores and on tap.

Stone RuinTen Triple IPA Now Available Nationwide

ESCONDIDO, CA (June 29, 2015) – It’s the time of year again when the mercury in thermometers rises in tandem with the hop faithful’s thirst for piney, botanical bitterness. The close of June marks the start of Stone RuinTen Triple IPA season forStone Brewing Co. An amped-up IPA building off its famous progenitor, Stone Ruination IPA, this once-a-year offering explodes with citrus and stone fruit aromas that give way to an onslaught of pungent, resinous, tropical fruit flavors. This immensely hopped IPA is available now in 22-ounce bottles and on draft at restaurants, bars and retail shelves where Stone beer is sold, nationwide.

Originally released to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Stone Ruination IPA, this splendorous, hop-heavy gem debuted in June 2012 as Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA and instantly became a hit among hoppy-beer lovers. Rather than limit the beer to one-hit wonder status, the recipe was revisited and added to Stone’s lineup of annual special releases. In 2013, it came back with the name Stone RuinTen IPA, the nickname given to it by the Stone Brewing Team. This year, it’s returning as 2015 Stone RuinTen Triple IPA and, though the word “triple” has been added to the name, that’s the only difference. The recipe remains the same: full-bodied, flavorful and hoppy as all get out…just the way we (and our fans) like it!

“Stone RuinTen Triple IPA has become one of our brewing team’s favorite IPAs, so we’re always thrilled to brew it come June,” says Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele. “Dry-hopping with five pounds of Citra and Centennial hops per barrel results in a magical blend of fruity, floral notes.”

Adds Stone CEO and Co-founder Greg Koch, “If Stone Ruination Double IPA 2.0 is a ‘Liquid Poem to the Glory of the Hop,’ then Stone RuinTen Triple IPA is ‘A Stage Dive into a Mosh Pit of Hops!’”

Built to sate the appetites of the highest order of hop fanatics, Stone RuinTen Triple IPA’s elevated malt presence provides a strong, full-bodied mouthfeel to help balance its intense, lingering hop bitterness while lending a slightly caramelized accent to hop-borne tropical fruit flavors. These delicious nuances are at their prime when the beer is consumed fresh, making Stone RuinTen Triple IPA an annual offering to be hunted down and enjoyed as soon as humanly possible.

As if the beer itself weren’t enough (it is), for the first time ever, the arrival of Stone RuinTen Triple IPA brings with it a celebration of both the beer and its recently updated, year-round counterpart, Stone Ruination Double IPA 2.0. This comes via Stone Ruination Nation. Hop-hungry craft beer enthusiasts will be able to soak in the lupulin love at stores, bars and restaurants across the country via a bevy of special events—some of which will include oaked and double-dry-hopped iterations of Stone Ruination Double IPA 2.0—and share what are sure to be bold experiences on social media using the hashtag #RuinationNation. Fans are invited to visit RuinationNation.com for more information on this celebration of the almighty hop and a pair of IPAs that pay fitting homage to beer’s boldest element.

You’re welcome…again.

(Papillion,  NE) – Nebraska Brewing Company announces expanded distribution into the State of Illinois specifically in the territory of Chicago. Distribution rights have been granted to Chicago Beverage Systems effective immediately.

The oldest member of the Reyes Holdings family of businesses, Chicago Beverage Systems began with the acquisition of Campbell Distributing in Chicago, Illinois in November 1979. Today, Chicago Beverage Systems is the leading beer distributor in one of the world’s largest beer markets.

Sales of Nebraska Brewing Company brands in Chicago commenced during mid-‐June 2015 with owners Paul & Kim Kavulak and their sales team in-‐market.

The introduction of Nebraska Brewing Company brands into Chicago represents further expansion into mature, healthy, and vibrant Craft Beer markets within the United States. The rollout into Chicago will begin with the standard core brands in draught and cans and a limited selection of Reserve Series beers. The Reserve Series line is comprised of beers aged in Chardonnay, Whiskey, Brandy, and Rum barrels. Each beer in the Reserve Series rate 96 to 99 points according to RateBeer, while the core IPA rates a solid 96. Most recently, Cardinal Pale Ale was awarded Gold at the coveted European Beer Star Awards and is currently the #1 ranked Pale Ale in Europe based upon this year’s competition.

Paul Kavulak, President of Nebraska Brewing Company stated: “In retrospect, Chicago was one of the first markets we had hoped to enter with our draught beers coming out of our brewpub.” Adding, “The early naivetĆ© associated with a fledgling brewery made the desire to entire markets much larger than our capacity an unrealistic goal. I’m glad things worked out the way they did and that we’re now entering Chicago with a newer, larger brewery and the capacity and brands to satisfy a knowledgeable Craft Beer drinker.”

Joe Morrison, Craft Brand Manager at Chicago Beverage Systems said “Chicago Beverage Systems is proud and excited to bring Nebraska Brewing Company to the Chicago market. They are a great addition to the already flourishing beer scene. Nebraska Brewing Company is a perfect fit for Chicago providing a unique and creative barrel program in addition to core beers that are true to style and quality.”

Kim Kavulak, Vice President of Nebraska Brewing Company added: “Chicago represents a diverse, well educated craft beer market. Our early desire to enter this market has now met with the timing of our expansion and we are excited to bring our portfolio of award winning beers to a city with such great taste.”

Nebraska Brewing Company was formed in November of 2007 and has established itself as a Midwest Innovator of quality Craft Beers and artisanal Barrel‐Aged Products. Building on a reputation for quality, flavor, and creativity, Nebraska Brewing Company strives to be a stand out in an ever growing field. Nebraska Brewing Company is proud to be locally owned and locally operated.

Small, independent, and pushing the envelope.

Standing Stone Brewing Co. Welcomes New General Manager

Ashland, Ore. – Visitors to Standing Stone Brewing Company in Ashland may have noticed a new face among the staff in the last few weeks. The local brewpub recently welcomed Scott Allen as the new general manager, a longtime Ashland resident and business owner with a multitude of hospitality experience and familiarity with Southern Oregon.

Allen joined the brewery in April after operating Allenorth Property Management in Ashland for eight years alongside his wife, Gina Allen. Citing admiration for Standing Stone’s mission of environmental stewardship, community involvement, and healthy lifestyle choices, Allen says the organization embodies many of the principles he, too, holds dear.

“When the opportunity to join Standing Stone presented itself, I felt honored,” says Allen. “I’ve always thought of Ashland as a magic place, and Standing Stone has continually felt like a key local business truly practicing the ideals of our town.”

Allen brings with him 14 years of experience with McMenamins Pubs & Breweries in the Portland area. His time with the Oregon City Pub, Rock Creek Tavern, and the Kennedy School Property has given him a measure of insight into “public house” environment, which he very much enjoys, Allen says.

Standing Stone’s established environmental sustainability standards have earned the brewery longtime local and regional recognition, including a recent listing as the #5 Best Green Company in Oregon by Oregon Business Magazine. Allen assures that customers can expect the same drive for producing great products with sustainable practices in mind at the brewpub.

“I see Standing Stone continuing to embrace the ideals of the last 18 years, as well as providing an ever-improving customer service experience along with our great food and beverage options. In this way, I hope to see the Standing Stone’s mission grow and thrive,” says Allen.

Standing Stone Brewing Company is located at 101 Oak Street in Ashland, Oregon. The brewpub makes beer on-site and is open 11am-midnight everyday with extensive outdoor dining and convenient bike parking out front. Allen welcomes guests of all ages to come enjoy views of mountains, the wood-fired oven or brew deck while gathering together over locally crafted food and beverages. ###

Ninkasi Brewing Company Debuts Artist in Residence Program

Inspiring art and quality craft beer have always paired well for Eugene-based craft brewery, Ninkasi Brewing Company. From its very beginning, Ninkasi dedicated itself to art, creating an in-house design team to direct and produce all branding. This year, Ninkasi takes that commitment to the next level with an Artist In Residence (AIR) program. The brewery will open its doors to selected artists in a variety of skillsets. Artists will be contracted annually to work hand-in-hand with Ninkasi’s marketing and design teams.

Beginning July 2015, Ninkasi will debut the program with its first AIR artist, Neal Williams. A Eugene-based gig poster artist and illustrator, Williams has worked with notable bands including The Black Keys, Queens of the Stone Age, Dave Matthews Band, The Head and The Heart, Soundgarden, Andrew Bird, and Interpol among others.

“The forward-thinking use of artwork in our creative has been a significant factor in the success of our brand,” explains Jon Rogers, Ninkasi CMO. “We are thrilled to launch a program to support artists in our local communities and at the same time, help us achieve our mission to Perpetuate Better Living.”

This is not the first time Ninkasi has collaborated with outside artists. Throughout the years, various projects have included collaborations in design and music. Annabelle Garcia, daughter of famed Jerry Garcia, is one of those examples. Garcia provided the key illustrations for three beer releases, including Ninkasi’s Special Release beer, Maiden the Shade. More recently, Ninkasi joined forces with Neal Williams to create the key art for Ground Control, an Imperial Stout fermented with Ale yeast that survived a trip to space and back. After the success of that release in April 2015, the brewery decided it was time to create a program to harness these relationships.

“When I came to Ninkasi, I got the chance to see the brewing process and learn more about the care and attention to detail that goes into the beer; it’s all about taking the time to produce something of quality,” says Williams. “I feel exactly the same way about my illustration work.”

Starting this month, Williams will set up a workspace inside of Ninkasi’s Eugene headquarters. There, Williams will continue his work on outside projects while lending his illustration talents and expertise to Ninkasi-specific collaborations throughout the next year.

“Our goal is to continue to enhance our brand, our workplace and the greater Ninkasi community,” states Rogers. “Through the AIR program, we’ll bring multiple artists with varied skills into our brewery to engage with our workers, offer seminars, and collaborate on key projects.”

“So much of my work with bands is done solely over email; being able to go into work and collaborate in-person has been a breath of fresh air,” says Williams. “I’ve been impressed with the amount of creativity surging throughout Ninkasi, as well as the fact that no matter what your position is, your opinion is taken seriously.”

Williams’ first projects will include the label art for a unique offering from the brewery, Imperial Pumpkin Sleigh’r, along with special edition artwork for its India Red Ale, Dawn of the Red, for the 2015 Halloween timeframe.

Learn more about the AIR program and projects, here: http://ift.tt/1eK5VVQ.

Alaska’s HooDoo Brewing Finds Big Solution to Small Problem

It’s summer—the best time of year to get outside. As craft beer enthusiasts though, we want to take our favorite craft beers with us. Unfortunately—but with good reason—many outdoor destinations do not allow glass. And for those of us who seek out the less traveled areas of the world, weight plays a big factor into how much beer you’re able to pack. In a state as ruggedly beautiful as Alaska, it makes sense that Fairbanks’ HooDoo Brewing Co. recently decided to can their German-style Kolsch.

“We are pleased to announce that our German Kƶlsch will now be available in cans, our first canned offering!” Hoodoo reported in their blog post “HooDoo Brewing Co. Brings Its Craft To Cans.”

Brewmaster and Owner Bobby Wilken is looking forward to the opportunity to enjoy his beer deep within the Alaskan wilderness, “I actually get goosebumps thinking about being in the middle of nowhere, up river, with a super fresh beer in my hand.”

Though aluminum packaging will aid Bobby in keeping his pack weight down, as well as the transportation costs to ship the lighter cans, the expense of simply purchasing the cans is the largest obstacle, not only for HooDoo, but for any small brewer looking to offer cans.

“A minimum order for empty can production at Crown or Ball is enormous, which, when you look at the numbers and amount of space you have to dedicate to the project, can be quite daunting for a small, new brewery like ours,” says Wilken. “We knew we wanted to can the Kƶlsch first, but we didn’t want to be locked into a single can design which would limit our ability to release other styles of our beer.”

The ever innovative and industrious company has come up with a design solution giving them the ability to package multiple styles of beer from one order of cans. Wilken enlisted the help of his sister, Karen and Mint Designs of Seattle to develop a nifty label that would affix to the original can design.

“The base can has all of the requirements pre-printed on it with the logo and the old panorama photo, Karen Wilken explains. “The label is the thin pop of color with the style info. So, for instance, if we want to release our American IPA, we update the label art, change the color to a green, and update all the associated descriptions that goes along with our IPA. The base can stays the same.”

As one of the most northern breweries in the U.S., HooDoo is all about making the most of their summers. The genius label solution ensures that if you find yourself in Fairbanks, you won’t be limited to their Kƶlsch in cans.

“We don’t have to print a massive amount of cans for one particular style and we can release styles in the cans as supply and demand allow,” said Karen. “We are hyper-local, focusing on our community first and we self-distribute. These are two other reasons why this design works for us.”

New Point Long Days Variety Summer 12-pack.

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (June 25, 2015) – For beer lovers, the long hot days of summer call for crisp, refreshing fruit beers.

The Stevens Point Brewery has answered the call with its Long Days variety 12-pack featuring four new seasonal fruit lagers just for summer: Point Lime Lager, Mango Lager, Tart Cherry Lager and Watermelon Mojito Lager. Introduced at retail during May wherever Point handcrafted beers are sold, the Long Days variety pack contains three 12-ounce longnecks of each new fruit brew.

Fruit beers continue to blossom across the craft-beer landscape and seasonal variety packs are also a fast-growing trend for craft brewers like Stevens Point Brewery, especially for the long days of summer. According to MarketWatch, sales of craft beer seasonal variety packages increased 21% in 2014, capturing more than 9% of all U.S. craft-beer sales for the year.

“Long hot summer days and cold beer are natural companions,” said Julie Birrenkott, Stevens Point Brewery’s Marketing Director. “The variety pack delivers a combination of unique, very refreshing fruit flavors, the perfect solution for beer drinkers seeking to relax and quench their thirst on hot summer evenings.”

Brewing Long Days lagers

Just the right balance between malt and hops and fresh fruit flavors is what Point Brewmaster Gabe Hopkins and his brewers aim for when they brew their new pale golden summer lagers.

Point Lime Lager is bursting with the citrusy crispness of pure, clarified lime juice from Florida-grown limes added during the brewing process. “This is a very clean, well-balanced beer,” Hopkins said. “The lime is a not-too-sweet citrus component that marries very well with the beer’s clean maltiness, adding a tart crispness to the flavor,” he said.

Point Mango Lager offers the flavor of freshly picked Florida mangoes combined with two-row malted barley and Mount Hood hops grown in the Pacific Northwest. “Mango is a very aromatic fruit and gives Mango Lager a delicate, Caribbean-style character,” Hopkins reported.

Point Tart Cherry Lager has a prominent, pleasing cherry nose, said Hopkins, who uses clarified cherry juice in his recipe. “The tartness from the cherry juice is one of the characteristics that define Point Tart Cherry Lager as a true summer beer,” he said.

Point Watermelon Mojito Lager is an intriguing combination of crisp lager with fresh watermelon juice, clarified cucumber juice and a hint of mint. Point’s brewers add 40 pounds of fresh mint leaves – the beer’s signature – for each 100-barrel brew, according to Hopkins. “This beer is one of my personal favorites,” Hopkins said. “We steep the mint leaves in cold water before adding them before the fermentation process begins. The watermelon, cucumber and mint flavors all come through very nicely.”

The Long Days lagers are refreshing summer session beers and great grilling companions, according to Hopkins. “They are just right for the long, hot days of summer,” he said.

Stevens Point Brewery

Stevens Point Brewery, founded in 1857, uses only the highest-grade barley malts, specialty malts, grains and the choicest hops to brew its handcrafted beers.

The Long Days variety pack is Stevens Point Brewery’s second variety 12-pack. Four unique year-round India pale ales – Point Spruce Tip IPA, Point Peach Mango IPA, Point White IPA and Point One Shot IPA – are available only in the Point IPA variety 12-pack introduced last year. The brewery’s year-round lineup also features flagship Point Special Lager; Point Onyx Black Ale, a robust dark ale; Point Belgian White, a Belgian-style wheat ale; Point Drop Dead Blonde Ale, a golden ale; Point Cascade Pale Ale, an American-style pale ale; Point Amber Classic, an American-style amber lager; and Point Beyond the Pale IPA, a robust, hoppy India Pale Ale. Year-round products include the Whole Hog Limited Edition “big beers:” Whole Hog Espresso Stout, Whole Hog Six-Hop India Pale Ale, Whole Hog Raspberry Saison, Whole Hog Russian Imperial Stout, Whole Hog Barley Wine Ale and Whole Hog Scotch Ale. Whole Hog Pumpkin Ale is a fall seasonal.

The brewery’s seasonal beers include summer favorites Point Coast Radler, a mix of beer and natural citrus flavors, and Point Nude Beach Summer Wheat, an award-winning unfiltered wheat ale; Point Oktoberfest, a Bavarian-style MƤrzen beer; Point St. Benedict’s Winter Ale, a rich, dark beer available from November through February; and Apricadabra Apricot Wheat Ale for the spring. Point also brews four unique James Page specialty beers sold only in convenient 12-ounce cans: A Cappella Gluten-free Pale Ale, Casper White Stout, Yhaba Dhaba Chai Tea Porter and Healani Pineapple Hefeweizen.

Point’s Ciderboys Cider Co. hard ciders blend unexpected fresh fruit flavors with apple cider. Ciderboys’ year-round products are First Press, a traditional hard cider; Raspberry Smash, alive with the tartness of raspberries; and Strawberry Magic, a blend of fresh strawberries and apple cider. Ciderboys also produces winter seasonal Mad Bark, made with natural cinnamon; fall seasonal Cranberry Road, a pairing of apple cider and cranberries; and seasonals Pineapple Hula, Peach County and Grand Mimosa. Pineapple Hula is made with fresh Hawaiian pineapple, Peach County combines pure peach flavor with apple cider, and Grand Mimosa is a winter cider made with succulent California oranges.

Gourmet soft drinks from the Stevens Point Brewery include Point Premium Root Beer, Point Premium Diet Root Beer, Point Premium Orange Cream, Point Premium Vanilla Cream, Point Kitty Cocktail and Point Premium Black Cherry Cream Soda.

MickDuff’s Brewing Co. Awarded 2 Medals at NABA

SANDPOINT, IDAHO- MickDuff’s Brewing Company from Sandpoint, Idaho claimed Silver and Bronze medals in the 2015 North American Beer Awards (NABA) in Idaho Falls, Idaho on June 4th. Judges awarded a Silver Medal for the Mashing Pumpkins in the Pumpkin Beer category and a Bronze Medal for the Irish Redhead in the Irish-Style Red Ale category, making it a two-time winner.

“I’m very excited to have won two medals, it’s a great honor,” said Head Brewer, Mickey Mahoney. “The North American Beer Awards is a great beer competition with a stellar group of judges so to be awarded even just one medal is a great feat and two is like a dream.”

The NABA and MickDuff’s go back a number of years. Since 2010, MickDuff’s has take home several medals: Gold Medal in 2010, as well as a Silver in 2012 and 2013, for the Strom Hammer IPA in the English-Style India Pale Ale category, Gold Medal in 2012 for the Tipsy Toehead Blonde Ale in the Light Ale category, Gold Medal for the Irish Redhead in the Irish-Style red Ale category, and Bronze Medal in 2011 for our Knot Tree Porter in the Robust Porter category.

MickDuff’s Brewing Co. recently took another step in their continuous growth by trading in their 7 BBL Brewery for a 20 BBL Brewery. Over the last two years, they acquired numerous 15-20 BBL fermenters and in May of 2015, decommissioned their original brewhouse and made room for new equipment. After entering in distribution with the Odom Corporation with the Northern 5 Counties of Idaho and much of Eastern Washington, they’ve seen their draft-only craft beer brand start to flourish. You can expect to see many more of their taps at restaurants, bars and anywhere craft beer is supported with 5 year-round offerings.

For more information, give MickDuff’s a call at 255-4351, email them at mail@mickduffs.com, www.mickduffs.com, connect with them on Facebook at http://ift.tt/1QOOqoa or visit their Brewpub at 312 N First Ave or the Beer Hall and Brewery Tasting Room at 220 Cedar St.

MickDuff’s Brewing Company is family owned, by two brothers and WSU grads, Mickey and Duffy Mahoney, established in 2006 and located in historic downtown Sandpoint, Idaho. Their emphasis is brewing well-balanced and all-natural beer. Their dedication to all natural beer means they refuse to filter, do not pasteurize or do not add preservatives or use unnecessary chemicals during the brewing process.

MickDuff’s distributes 5 year-round pub-favorite core beers: Blonde, Irish Redhead, Lake Paddler Pale Ale, NOHO Imperial IPA and Knot Tree Porter, as well as many limited edition seasonals like their Biere de Mars, Wet Hop IPA, Mashing Pumpkins, Imperial Bourbon Stout and more.

Cape May Brewing Company Wins World Beer Championship Awards

Two Cape May Brewery beers have earned medals in the World Beer Championships, bringing the company’s 2015 award total up to 13.

“Ours is the oldest international beer competition in America, since 1994,” says Jerald O’Kennard, Director of The Beverage Testing Institute, which hosts the contest. “And we were the first to use the consumer accepted 100-point scale to succinctly and quantitatively communicate a beer’s level of quality to consumers.”

CMBC’s Belgian Strong Ale, Devil’s Reach, earned a silver medal and 86 points from judges, who described the beer as “supple, lively, and effervescent.” It’s on tap at the brewery’s tasting room now.

The Tripel Wreck, another Belgian-style beer, earned 84 points, a bronze medal, and more praise from its tasters, who labeled the brew “medium to full bodied” with hints of “buoyant orange marmalade.”

For more information on Cape May Brewing Company’s award-winning beers visit capemaybrewery.com or call (609) 849-9933.

About Cape May Brewing Company:

Once upon a time, twenty-something Ryan Krill earned a six-figure salary working in finance and real estate development in Manhattan, while his college roommate, Chris Henke, designed satellites. During a summer weekend at the Jersey shore, they brewed a batch of beer with Ryan’s dad that wasn’t half bad. “Should we open a brewery?” Ryan asked, only half-serious. But, by the following year, the three guys had secured a space at Cape May Airport where they concocted a makeshift brew system and honed their beer-making skills. In 2011, they started with one client. Today, there are over 330 accounts in Jersey and Pennsylvania proudly serving the guys’ award-winning recipes. And CMBC’s fearless leaders have never looked back.

Beehive to Bottle – Dedicated to Growing Bees

INDEPENDENCE, ORE – Rogue Farms announces a collision with Mother Nature and 7,140,286 honeybees with the release of Honey Kolsch. Brewed with honey that is uncapped, extracted, and filtered, Honey Kolsch is made with Rogue Farms barley, and hops grown across from our hives. Honey Kolsch is a toast to hardworking honeybees everywhere and a nod to growing the revolution in beekeeping.

In the past year, US beekeepers have lost 42% of their colonies. While beekeepers can make up for some of these losses by splitting their hives, there is still more that can be done. In addition to splitting our hives, we send our honeybees on a California vacation during the winter to avoid the chilly and wet Oregon air. When they return in early spring, they get nectar from the blossoms in our Hazelnut trees, Big Leaf Maples, daffodils and tulips abundant in Oregon. They have now moved on to wild berries and our growing crops including pumpkins, marionberries and jalapeƱos. We also plant wildflowers just for our honeybees so they have a bonus round of pollen and nectar to produce honey.

With the split hives and abundant flow of late spring nectar this year, Rogue Farms honeybees made honey that highlights the proprietary pallet of the Wigrich Appellation – imparting unique floral aromas into the beer. Crisp and refreshing, Honey Kolsch arrives just in time for summer. Find it on draft and in yellow 750 mL bottles nationwide.

Southerleigh Fine Food and Brewery

The history of the original Pearl Brewery provides a sense of belonging for San Antonio’s brewing community. It’s an identity that wasn’t lost on brothers Tim and Alex Rattray when they opened The Granary ‘Cue and Brew in 2012, placing their brewpub in the former home of Ernest Charles Mueller the original cooper at the Pearl Brewery.

As if that wasn’t exciting enough, in March 2015, it was announced that brewing was taking place once again in the historic Pearl brewhouse. After 13 long years, brewing returned to the Pearl Brewery in the form of Southerleigh Fine Food and Brewery.

Headed by chef/owner Jeff Balfour (formerly of Citrus at the Valencia Hotel) and brewer extraordinaire William Les Locke (first head brewer at Branchline Brewing), Southerleigh pays homage to the the Pearl’s past, while looking forward to the future and their own identity.

Balfour had been looking to open a brewpub for awhile prior to getting in contact with The Pearl group in 2011, and felt the original brewhouse was optimal. “When you look at the space and the artists renderings, it’s just perfect,” said Balfour, who along with Locke, sat down with me to discuss Southerleigh.

“The Pearl group had always wanted brewing to return to the brewhouse” said Balfour, who had looked at a couple of other locations prior to The Pearl. With this revitalization of brewing tradition, both Balfour and Locke hope that it serves as a model for other defunct regional breweries. “We’re excited to continue the Pearl tradition with Southerleigh,” said Locke. “It’s a feeling that can’t be put into words.”

Southerleigh BuildingSoutherleigh does more than just continue the brewing tradition of the area. Most of the building incorporates a large amount of the original brewery. Much of the original equipment has been incorporated as part of the brewery’s motif.

Four fermentors, original to The Pearl, are kept on the upper level, visible to patrons of Southerleigh’s south dining room and serve to cover many of the serving tanks. The building’s original arches have also been kept, in addition to some of the original pumps and firkins. The brewpub’s north wall features an artists rendering of the original brewhouse blueprints along with a timeline of its history.

A Focus on Southern Flavors

Southerleigh features a menu that adjusts with the season, reflecting Balfour’s upbringing in Galveston, Texas, with that traditional Southern dishes. Some menu items include hand-rolled pretzels, Texas Longhorn jerky, wood-fired meats, traditional shellfish boils, beer-braised meat, among many others dishes. Balfour’s enjoys dazzling patrons with his creativity and passion for traditional foods that often take on a modern flare.

This creativity and innovation doesn’t just stay on the food side of the house. Balfour advised that he and Locke have an open collaboration with the food and beer menus. “We will be constantly working to create beers that have our dishes in mind and vise versa,” said Balfour.

This philosophy is definitely shared by Locke, who sees a symbiotic relationship with Balfour and the food side of the business. Locke has been known to use unusual ingredients in his beers that can easily pair with almost any dish. “I was excited for the building and equipment to be completed so that Jeff and I could begin working together,” said Locke. “He has the same philosophy as I do when it comes to food, and with the unlimited versatility of beer, the pairings will be endless.”

Southerleigh has 10-12 house beers and several guest taps. Regular offerings include a California common (steam beer), a German-style helles and what Locke refers to as a Darwinian IPA, an India pale ale that will always be evolving. A barrel program to include sour ales is also in the works, and their helles is being used as the base beer for a sour program.

Plans are already in motion for a bottling line, with the possibility of a canning line at some point as well. With all this production in the works, Locke is putting his brewing system through its paces, often adding a second brewing shift.

Southerleigh boasts a 15 barrel system from Portland Kettle Works out of Portland, Ore. “It’s important to us that all aspects of the restaurant and brewery reflect an American feel—specifically southern,” said Balfour.

We want our customer to feel that they can relate to us when they are here,” said Locke. “We want all aspects of the restaurant to be approachable, so that regardless of your income level, you’ll feel at home here.”

Don’t take this laid back approach for granted though. All chefs will be up to Balfour’s high standards for culinary knowledge, as well as his philosophy on food. Servers will be no different when it comes to the beer side. “We plan to have all servers obtain the Certified Beer Server designation from the Cicerone Certification Program,” said Locke.
