Odell Brewing Introduces Sensory Basics

Sometimes it’s nice to, “stop and smell the roses,” right? Taking time to focus and re-acquaint yourself with the journey, rather than rushing through your everyday tasks. The same can be true with craft beer. We all know how to drink beer, but when was the last time you stopped to evaluate what’s in that glass? You know you like it, but what is it that you like about it?

Luckily, Odell Brewing, in Fort Collins, Colo., has you covered. They recently published a blog post “Sensory Basics – Understanding Flavor,” about getting back to the basics of evaluating craft beer goodness.

“Have you ever swallowed a sip of your favorite beer and struggled to find the right words to describe its delicious flavor? It’s not always easy. Beers come in an array of styles, colors, and flavors. That’s the best part about craft beer, right? There’s a lot that goes into tasting a beer: sight, taste, smell, and touch (mouthfeel); although, you may not realize it when you’re sipping beers with your friends.”

While a very simple and effective way to evaluate your favorite beer, Odell’s first suggestion doesn’t involve tasting the beer at all. Instead, the brewery instructs you to cover the glass with a clean hand and swirl it. To find out why, be sure to read their entire post, “Sensory Basics – Understanding Flavor.”

We can all get into a rush, if there is one thing that warrants you to slow down and take a moment to evaluate, shouldn’t it be beer? Sometimes you just have stop and smell the beers every once and awhile.

New Belgium Fermentation Vessels Set to Arrive in Asheville

Asheville, NC, February 24, 2015 –New Belgium’s Asheville fermentation vessels and bright beer tanks are scheduled to arrive at their east coast home by mid-March. Two dozen FVs and a half dozen BBTs departed from ZIEMANN in Bürgstadt Germany in January and arrived to the Port of Charleston, SC, in early February. New Belgium is building an east coast location with an expected capacity of 500,000 barrels. The oversized vessels require rolling road closures and NC Department of Transportation approved routing and police escort, as they arrive to New Belgium Asheville.

“We are thankful for the collaboration of our partners in this process, as well as the patience of those along the route,” said Alex Dwoinen, Asheville Brewing Manager. “Placing these vessels into our new home on Craven Street is another reminder that we are one large step closer to brewing in this great city and sharing our beer more widely, and that’s incredibly exciting.”

The vessels are currently scheduled to arrive during daylight hours between Monday, March 9 and Saturday, March 14, pending weather delays. They will travel in pairs with a minimum of 30 minutes between arrivals. Installation of the vessels will also begin this week.

The two dozen FVs have varying sizes between 32 and 52 feet tall with net volumes between 547 and 1860 hectoliters or up to 49,000 gallons. They house the process where yeast ferments wort into beer and allow the liquid to condition and mature. The six BBTs, which store beer before packaging, are approximately 55 feet tall with net volume of 2090 hectoliters, equivalent to about 55,000 gallons.

New Belgium’s 200 hectoliter brewhouse system arrived seamlessly and on schedule in January with support from NC DOT, the districts along the route, Buncombe County, the City of Asheville, and the Asheville Police Department.

Public hiring for the Asheville location kicked off last month, with two dozen positions filled as of February 2015. New Belgium anticipates brewing beer in Asheville by the end of 2015.

Here’s a video of a vessel coming through Texas to Fort Collins, CO, as part of New Belgium’s 2012 tank farm expansion.

NC DOT APPROVED ROUTE

The vessels will travel I-40E and I-240E/I-26W to Amboy Road, take a left onto Lyman Street, left onto Roberts Street, at the traffic circle they will exit onto Haywood Road, go over the West Asheville bridge and turn right onto Craven Street.

New Belgium Brings Back Sour, Spice and Everything Nice with the Return of La Folie, Transatlantique Kriek and Cocoa Molé

Ft. Collins, Colo. – February 19, 2015 – New Belgium Brewing is releasing 2015’s La Folie and Transatlantique Kriek while reissuing a new Cocoa Molé, offering an inventive mixture of sour, sweet, heat and tradition. Two of these Lips of Faith additions (Transatlantique Kriek and La Folie) will remain out through the remainder of 2015 and Cocoa Molé will be out through March, or while supplies last.

La Folie, French for “the folly” and New Belgium’s earliest sour beer release dating back to 1997, returns yet again to offer this year’s sour delight. A wood-conditioned brown ale, La Folie ages one to three years in French oak foeders formerly used in wine production. The result? A smooth oaky nose and delightfully tart finish. This one-of-a-kind sour brown ale is sharp like a lambic, sour in the finish, and full of green apple, cherry, and plum-skin notes. It pours a deep mahogany.

La Folie is 7 percent ABV and available in 22-oz. bombers and on draft.

Transatlantique Kriek offers another dose of sour that’s crisp and effervescent. The 2015 edition of Transatlantique Kriek began life in the oaken vessels of Gert Christiaens’ Oud

Beersel brewery, deep in Belgium’s Senne Valley. After it wood aged, Oud Beersel’s lambic was blended with tart cherries and shipped across the pond to New Belgium Brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert. In concert with Oud Beersel’s cherry lambic ale, Bouckaert created a full golden brew to blend in and round out this kriek. The result is an intense cherry nose leading to a pleasing sweet-tart flash finish across the palate.

Transatlantique Kriek is 8 percent ABV and is available in 22-oz. bombers and on draft.

For a behind the scenes look at the release party for these sours check out the “epicness” from the Lost in the Woods party here. To learn more about the history of New Belgium’s sour program click here.

The third, Lips of Faith release is Cocoa Molé, a spiced chocolate porter. The beer combines chocolate, cinnamon and chilies for a sweet and spicy burst of fun. Brewed with deep caramel and dark chocolate malts, plus a healthy dash of chocolate rye, it pours midnight dark with a subtle, reddish hue and pillowy, burnished head atop. Starting on the tongue with the sweet chocolate and finishing with a fine-spun heat of peppers, Cocoa Molé is a worldly contrast in a glass – olé.

Cocoa Molé is 9 percent ABV and is available in 22-oz. bombers and on draft.

FCB Releases Giles, Golden Imperial Ale

Fort Collins, Colo. – FCB (Fort Collins Brewery) is excited to announce the release of its latest Malt Monster brew, Giles, Golden Imperial Ale Friday, February 20th.

A villainous monster, Giles, Golden Imperial Ale may be a light-bodied brew, but he’s as complex of a creature as any. The fighting trilogy of fruity esters, light, spicy hops and sweet notes of alcohol supported by a soft malt character create an all too familiar mischief-maker.

“Giles is the first brew to kick off our 2015 season of monsters, and I think the audience following the Malt Monster series will enjoy its light, but bold flavors present throughout the beer,” said Kaylee Kulich, Brand Manager at FCB.

Malt Monsters (MM) is an artisanal bomber series of limited release high-alcohol beers. Each unique brew features its own monster and history depending on origin of the beer style. Giles was named after the famous Gilles of Binche, performers disguised with masks, red costumes and wooden clogs. Like the performers, Giles, Golden Imperial Ale is a symbol of the coming spring.

Each rotational limited release monster is available in 22oz bombers and on draft throughout FCB’s distribution footprint. Giles will be available to ship beginning the week of February 23rd.

MM merchandise and pint glasses can be purchased custom to each monster at FCB or online.

Barley Mow Brewing Company out of Largo, FL has completed their expansion into their new 25,000 sq. foot facility. They are currently brewing on their brand new 30 bbl brewhouse that was fabricated in Saint Petersburg, FL by BrewFab LLC.

To celebrate the expansion and hard work they have put into their new facility they will begin to spread their footprint around the state. Including launching in the Jacksonville market late February. They will be hosting a few events around town, we have the details for you below, and will be attending the Riverside Craft Beer Festival on February 28th.

“We wanted to create unique events that fit with our image and philosophy while still being approachable. We believe that our beer is for everyone. Our entire staff believes in our mission statement ‘Simple. Honest. Craft’ and we want that to reflect in all aspects of our brands and brewery,” says Thomas Barris, Chief Marketing Officer at Barley Mow Brewing Company.

Their core beers, which will be featured at the events around Jacksonville, as well as at Riverside Craft Beer Festival include:

Quackalope – American IPA, 6.8% ABV. A traditional American IPA – citrusy, piney, and refreshing.

The Unkindness – American Black Ale, 7.4% ABV. This is the beer that got it all started. We used a ton of hops for both bittering and aroma. It’s dark, but don’t be fooled, it’s not nearly as roasty as it appears.

Selkie – Belgian Rye Pale Ale, 5.1% ABV. This unique beer has a combination of fruity Belgian yeast and rye spice followed by a smooth biscuity finish. It’s citrusy, herbal, and delicious.

Maven – Nitro Milk Stout, 6.5% ABV. This Milk stout has roasted malt character balanced by a silky smooth sweetness that makes for an easy drinking full flavor stout

If Birdman was Beerman

Let me be honest about something: I don’t care about film. To me, there’s little difference between a holiday blockbuster and an artsy, independent horror flick from South Korea or the Netherlands. What I do care about is beer, and I admit I’m pretty one-dimensional about it—I’ve been known to find any possible excuse to steer a conversation back to the subject. So after friends dragged me to see Birdman , it should come as no surprise that what I got out of the film was a lesson about beer.

Actually, the experience of watching the movie isn’t what made an impression on me. It was later, when I told one of my buddies that I’d recently seen it. He cringed, expecting me to say that I didn’t like it…and he was right. Although Birdman is nominated for an Academy Award and has a bunch of characters I enjoyed, overall I wasn’t a fan—and I launched into a detailed explanation.

My friend nodded along as I lectured him on why I didn’t care for Birdman, and then he said: “Did you notice that one scene was filmed for like 15 minutes straight through?”

I hadn’t. It would never have occurred to me to pay attention to the way a movie was shot. But thinking back on it, I had to admit that scene was pretty cool. The camera followed the action through a backstage labyrinth for minutes without a cut, seamlessly picking up on a new conversations or introducing new characters.

Considering the process that went into making the film, instead of just my gut reaction, gave me a whole new way of thinking about something that, just seconds before, I had been criticizing. My first impression of the movie started to fade, and you know what Birdman started to remind me of? Beer!

Beerman

In Birdman, the main character (played by Michael Keaton) leaves a lucrative job making action films to pursue “real” acting on Broadway—writing, producing, directing and assuming the starring role. It’s no spoiler to say that the pressure weighs heavily on him, both in terms of his desire to create a well-received show and his need to succeed in reinventing himself and his career. Those of us who know craft brewers have heard a similar story time and time again.

Around the same time I saw Birdman, being that one-dimensional beer guy, I braved snow-packed roads to check out a new brewery that had recently opened. It was a weekday afternoon, so the place was empty except for three local homebrewers, front and center, chatting about “flocculation.”

I perched on a stool with the best view of both the tap list and the brewery. Before long I was greeted by the owner and brewmaster. While passing me samples that weren’t on the tap list and letting me taste a Belgian-style dubbel that was just about ready to be conditioned, the owner told me the story of why he decided to start a brewery.

While the details were unique to him, the tale was almost cliché: A passionate homebrewer, unfulfilled and burnt out by his corporate job, takes the leap into the world of professional brewing. Go to ten new breweries and you’ll hear some iteration of that story seven times.

What isn’t always conveyed in the story is the hard work and deep personal investment that goes into starting a brewery. Getting rid of the hated “nine-to-five” feels great, but new brewers have to overcome financial hurdles as well as their own self-doubts. Perfecting the recipes is just one of many concerns like: Will the inspection go well? Will the licensing get approved? Will the equipment come on time? Will there be enough beer to get through the first week? Will people like the beer? The pressure to succeed is seemingly insurmountable.

I spoke with the owner a bit longer, and watched a good number of growlers get refilled. It was great to hear that the neighborhood had really embraced his brewery. After a while, our conversation turned to critics and reviews. He said that very early on, a woman at the bar checked in on the Untappd app to write that one of his beers tasted like “beaver butt.” His business partner took it more personally than he did, but it made me wonder: What would Birdman do?

Everybody’s a Critic

beer-breweryIn the climax of the film, Birdman’s protagonist has a showdown with the villain, a cold, entitled, elitist theatre critic. She tells him that no matter how the opening night performance goes, she plans on giving it a terrible review. Her words are essentially a death sentence for the show.

Now, one negative comment on Untappd is probably not as serious as a bad review in the New Yorker. But social media is filled with uninformed and unconstructive comments about beer. Half the time they’re complaints about “hipsters ruining craft beer” or claims that a certain beer or brewery “sucks.”

People are entitled to have their own opinions, but that doesn’t mean they’re qualified to give one. I’m certainly not qualified to share my opinions about movies! And just because someone has the ability to pound on a keyboard doesn’t mean they have the authority to make informed criticisms of beer.

Even those who know a lot about a subject, like Birdman’s theater critic, sometimes let their gut reactions get in the way—just like I did when first describing the movie to my friend. But as I learned when I started to think about the process of making the film, all it takes to change an opinion is to look at something a different way.

I wonder if the Untappd reviewer would have been more positive (or at least more constructive) if she’d thought about all the work that goes into starting up a brewery, and all of the weighty expectations brewers place on themselves. Maybe she would have found a little compassion and thought twice before comparing someone else’s dream to the back end of a woodland creature.

So before you criticize and crucify a beer or a brewery based on a first impression, try to find another perspective. Talk to the owners and brewers. Ask about what it took to get the brewery up and running. And try to make your feedback helpful, even if you don’t love everything about it. Give the brewers a chance to persevere and prove themselves — just like Birdman. He managed to get the reviewer to see things differently and rewrite her bad review, and he went on to be a huge success.

Or at least, I think that’s what happened—I left to grab a beer before the movie ended.

Cigar City White Oak Jai Alai Returns!

Cigar City is releasing their highly sought-after White Oak Jai Alai for the first time in 2015!

” This is an American White Oak-aged version of Jai Alai India Pale Ale. The white oak adds smoothing notes of vanilla and slight hints of dill to the aroma and flavor profile. The finish is elegantly dry due to the light tannin notes from oak aging and though still loaded with hop flavor, hop bitterness is more restrained.”

Look for this beer in 4-pack cans at retailers across the state as well as on draft at select craft beer bars!
