Craft brews engaging fans one beer at a time

Two pieces of news from the brewing industry caught my eye this week and I feel that we can learn something about beer by looking at them closely. They take place at opposite ends of the brewing industry, but there's a common thread between them: Engagement.

A new India Pale Ale beer brewed on Prince Edward Island has an alcohol content of 8.5 per cent. Beer In Ads #1389: Take Up The Slack

Open Brewing, Asheville’s Newest Brewery to Open December 3rd, 2014 in Gerber Village

Press Contact: Chall Gray

828.674.2036

chall@monkpub.com

Asheville, NC – November 26, 2014 Open Brewing, South Asheville’s newest brewery and brand new concept in the craft beer world, is set to open its doors officially on Wednesday, December 3rd. Conceptualized by Thirsty Monk owner, Barry Bialik, Open Brewing will serve as the first commercial brewpub in the country dedicated to “open-source brewing,” an incubator for homebrewers to “guest brew,” under the mentorship of professional Brewmaster, Norm Penn. For beer lovers, Open Brewing will be a cozy neighborhood taproom focused on the craft of making unique, small batch beers.

Open Brewing will have 10 taps, including a Strong Scotch Ale, brewed by MALT homebrew club co-founder, Dave Keller; a Foreign Extra Stout brewed by Blue Ridge Brew Off Best in Show awardee, John Olson; and, a West IV, a Belgian session ale inspired by the rare Trappist Westvleteren beers, brewed by Mountain Xpress Beer Scout Thom O’Hearn, and local homebrewer Matt Kane. Also on tap, look for a few of Norm’s experimental beers, including his Honeybadger Honey Brown Ale, Must Love Coconuts Coconut IPA, and more. Also, look for one or two guest taps of homebrew inspired beers.

“We’ve had a great reception to this idea so far, from brewers and the South Asheville community, and we’re excited to create a new beer destination on this side of town,” says owner Barry Bialik.

Open Brewing is located at 20 Gala Dr. #101 in Gerber Village, off Hendersonville Rd, the location of the former Thirsty Monk South. Hours are Wednesday-Saturday, 4pm-11pm.

Open Brewing is continuing to accept submissions for the next round guest brew spots, beginning in early 2015. Visit www.obrewing.com for information on how to submit a recipe for consideration.

Grayton Beer Company Opens Taproom

SOUTH WALTON, Fla. – Located in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., Grayton Beer Company is pleased to announce the completion of the brewery’s new taproom, which opened on Nov. 21. Taproom hours will vary until January, and updates can be found on graytonbeer.com or the brewery’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. A grand opening event will be announced in the coming weeks.

Currently open to the public, the taproom boasts a 40-ft. bar made of recycled wood pallets and 25 taps where customers can enjoy all of Grayton’s unique brews. This includes Grayton’s specialty small-batch beers that are exclusively available in the taproom. The bar will also feature guest taps for other craft beers as well as collaboration beers between Grayton and other local craft breweries.

“Opening a taproom at the brewery has always been part of the vision for us at Grayton Beer Company,” says Jamey Price, president of Grayton Beer Company. “We’re really excited for people to have the opportunity to come experience how we make our beer, meet the characters who brew it and then enjoy the beer itself.”

The taproom is the newest upgrade to Grayton’s 30-barrel brewhouse located at 217 Serenoa Road in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. The 30,000 sq.-ft. brewery features a brand new equipment from Allied Beverage Tank (ABT), a Markyl 125 bottles-per-minute bottling line, a state-of-the-art lab run by a Harvard Ph.D. and over 10,000 barrels of annual production capacity.

“Fortunately the demand for our beer has been so high that we’ve never stopped brewing which delayed the taproom opening,” says Price. “Finally being able to add this new element to the experience of Grayton beer is a great milestone for us.”

4 Reasons to Visit a Craft Brewery on Small Business Saturday

There is nothing wrong with jockeying for position to score a heavily discounted flat-screen this Friday, but don’t forget to grab a craft beer at your favorite small and independent craft brewery on Small Business Saturday.

Ironically started by one of the major credit card companies, Small Business Saturday began in 2010 as a campaign to encourage shoppers to support their local main street businesses.

Since the majority of Americans live within 10 miles of a brewery, eager craft beer fans should have no problem getting out for the cause.

While some may think the best deals will be gone the day before, there isn’t much more of a value than supporting your local brewery and community. Check out the economic impact of craft brewers in your state and find a brewery near you with CraftBeer.com’s Brewery Locator.

4 Reasons to Visit a Craft Brewery on Small Business Saturday

  1. There are now over 3,000 small and independent craft brewers in the United States, the most since before Prohibition.

  2. Despite surpassing 3,000 breweries, small and independent craft brewers only represent 7.8 percent of the overall U.S. beer market.

  3. Craft brewers contributed $33.9 billion to the U.S. economy in 2012.

  4. Craft brewers provided more than 360,000 jobs, with 108,440 jobs directly at breweries and brewpubs (including serving staff).

The best airport breakfasts

Rick Bayless' Bacon Mollete at Tortas Frontera

Rick Bayless’ Bacon Mollete

Best case scenario: You breeze through security with time to spare. More likely: Snow and sleet leave you stranded. Don’t waste time screaming at a gate agent; instead, enjoy the most important meal of the day at these better-than-fast-food airport outposts.

Chicago O’Hare // Tortas Frontera

Terminals 1, 3 and 5 sell breakfast sandwiches the Rick Bayless way—that is, locally driven, authentically Mexican and in the vein of his iconic downtown Frontera Grill. The airport offshoot puts out a.m. tortas (griddle-baked sandwiches on bolillo or telera bread) and molletes (open-faced versions) that show off the chef’s geniously unfussy flavor compositions: There’s a hearty egg-chorizo torta, and molletes wearing fig spread atop smoked pork, or pecans and peanut butter over caramelized plantains. A yogurt bar puts flavor combos in your hands: Choose plain or Greek yogurt, honey or cajeta caramel, house granola or compote—or pile on the whole enchilada.

Newark Liberty International // Garden State Diner

This Jersey-style diner serves up hearty bites and a healthy dose of kitsch, like the classic car balanced above the entrance. The menu’s got a dozen-plus omelets and playful faves like Pancakes Elvis (peanut butter and banana, naturally). For genuine N.J. flavor, go for Frankie’s Eggs Benedict: two eggs, poached to wobbly perfection over a slab of grilled Taylor ham—a processed cross between Canadian bacon and fried bologna—on a toasty, open-faced English muffin, smothered in creamy hollandaise. Wash it down with a shake like the Orange Creamsicle: vanilla ice cream and orange juice whipped into creamy harmony. Need a different kind of pick-me-up? The full bar opens at 9 a.m.

Phoenix Sky Harbor // Barrio Café Por Avion

If you didn’t make it to the real Barrio Café, a Phoenix institution run by twice-James-Beard-nominated chef Silvana Salcida Esparza, you can still taste Southwest sabor at its colorful Terminal 4 outpost. You’ll avoid all airport blasé with massively portioned spicy egg dishes, like a simple sammy with huevos done up your way and topped with cheese, chorizo and salsa. Or, opt for the sombrero-sized Arizona Burrito brimming with sweet ’n’ spicy green chile pork and gooey cheese crowned with a pair of fried eggs. Sip French-pressed coffee, or opt for a kicky Michelada made with a Mexican brew. Missed breakfast? Try any dish with the famous Cochinita Pibil.

BEFORE YOU BOARD… Get one last sip at these airport spinoffs of beloved breweries: 1. Stone Brewing, San Diego International // 2. New Belgium Hub, Denver International // 3. Bell’s Brewery, Gerald R. Ford International (Grand Rapids, Mich.) // 4. Cigar City Brewing, Tampa International // 5. Laurelwood Brewing, Portland International

Playalinda Brewing Co. Announces Opening of Tasting Room

Playalinda Brewing Company, the much-anticipated North Brevard craft brewery start-up, will throw open the tasting room doors at 4pm Friday, November 14, 2014.

Located at 305 South Washington Avenue in the heart of historic downtown Titusville, Playalinda Brewing Company will launch with 15 house-brewed beers including two flagship beers — Bottomless Blonde Ale and Rocket Man Red Ale – and even a root beer. Ron Raike, Playalinda’s Brewmaster/Certified CiceroneTM, designed the draft beer list to feature a wide range of styles and seasonal offerings.

Featuring a 40-foot, custom-built copper bar and custom-built tables, the tasting room has a seating capacity for 50 patrons. The drink rail bordering the brew house, as well as outdoor seating, offer additional space for customers to enjoy the hand-crafted beers.

“We want our tasting room to have the feel of a local gathering place, a comfortable living room atmosphere where you come to meet old friends and make new ones,” co-owner Bryan Scott says.

Tasting room hours will be Wednesdays and Thursdays 5-10pm, Fridays 4pm-midnight, Saturdays noon-midnight, and Sundays noon-8pm. A short list of simple, pre-prepared food items will also be offered.

Raike and his wife Katie have partnered with the Scotts in this joint venture. With Ron’s creativity and extensive brewing prowess along with Katie’s knowledge of the beer industry and tireless work ethic, the Playalinda Brewing team is forging ahead to enhance the beer landscape in Titusville and northern Brevard County. The Raikes, with a combined 27 years of experience in the industry, are excited to commit their knowledge and skills to this budding company.

Playalinda Brewing Company is located in the 100-year-old building known locally as the Titusville Hardware Store. The Scotts converted the space into the microbrewery and tasting room while carefully preserving its historical characteristics including the building’s façade, original plaster-and-brick walls, and existing cabinetry.

“We appreciate all of the local support we’ve received, and we’re happy to be a vital part of downtown Titusville,” Scott says. “We’re excited to finally be able to open the doors and share the amazing beer that Ron has developed for us.”
