FCB: New Year, New Seasonals

Fort Collins, Colo. – FCB (Fort Collins Brewery) is excited to release its brand new seasonals, Black Sheep, Black IPA and FCB Hefeweizen beginning January, 2015.

Standing apart from the herd, Black Sheep, Black India Pale Ale is a result of fortunate contradiction. FCB’s newest 4-pack seasonal is an elegantly blended array of bright citrus and earthly hop aromas with subtle notes of chocolate and coffee. It is especially smooth for its dark appearance, but contains a solid malt backbone, setting the stage for an artfully crafted arrangement of hops.

ABV: 6.8%

IBU: 45

SRM: 70

True to German style brewing techniques, FCB’s Hefeweizen has an aroma of citrus and spice that come alive with robust flavors of bready wheat and sweet malt. A hazy golden hue and refreshing finish, this 6-pack seasonal bids a goodbye to winter and a nod to the first taste of spring.

ABV: 5.0%

IBU: 15

SRM: 5

Black Sheep, Black IPA and FCB Hefeweizen will be available to FCB’s distribution footprint in bottles and on draft. Hefeweizen will also be part of FCB’s Seasonal Brewer’s Lunch Box, a variety 12-pack.

The Fort Collins Brewery & Tavern is a family-owned, handcrafted microbrewery and full service tavern in Northern Colorado, established in 2003. FCB offers an outstanding line up of 50 ales and lagers that can be found on tap as well as in bottles throughout the U.S. For more information, visit fortcollinsbrewery.com or call 970-472-1499. Sudwerk growth spurs community donations

DAVIS, Calif. – Sudwerk Brewing Co. set a company record this year for charitable giving, and its taproom, The Dock Store, became a popular venue for community fundraisers.

Sudwerk donated more than $10,000 to community groups in 2014, much of it from events hosted at The Dock. It supported other fundraisers through community partnerships.

Co-owner Trent Yackzan, whose grandfather was one of the brewery’s, founders in 1989, said, “It’s a major part of our vision as company, to be a strong and reliable community partner to Davis.” He, along with fellow Davis native and co-owner Ryan Fry, strive to build on that each year, with more charitable giving and continued expansion of seating and events at The Dock. The pair, backed by new investors, reinvigorated the brewery in 2013.

The Sudwerk taproom is a casual gathering place, where patrons taste innovative local brews, play games with friends, meet other beer fans – and unplug. “You can’t drink a beer through the internet,” Fry said. “You have to put down your phone and enjoy the people you’re with.”

Since it opened in 2013, “The Dock is really becoming a community hub,” Yackzan said. “It’s like its own neighborhood. There’s an authentic vibe that you can really only find at local breweries.”

The brewery’s slogan “Savor the Session” promotes that balanced life, encouraging people to live in the moment, and appreciate friends and family.

“This is just the beginning,” Fry said. “We want to be the best business we can be, supporting our local community – being a good business partner and being a good charitable partner as well.”

2014 charitable recipients included: The Greenbelt Brewers Association; UC Davis’ Food Science Brewing Club; KDRT and KDVS radio stations; Davis Bike Club Race Team, Davis Bicycles!, Trixies Bike Polo team, and UC Davis Men’s Ultimate Frisbee team; local nonprofits Citizens Who Care, Davis Community Meals, Music Only Makes Sense and Yolo Crisis Nursery; the Charlie DeGrange Savings Fund; “Davisville 2013” film project; and Movember.org.

Community partners: Sudwerk Brewing Co. supported several other major fundraisers. Most notably, it co-sponsored the Davis Bike & Brew Fest with de Vere’s Irish Pub in August, which raised about $13,000 for the U.S. Bicycle Hall of Fame. Its most successful and longtime partner, Soroptimist International of Davis, makes the biggest impact. Volunteers from the women’s service organization sell Sudwerk beer and local wine at the Davis Farmers Market on Wednesday evenings. In its 2013-2014 fiscal year, the market booth raised more than $43,000 that will go back into the community in the form of grants to local organizations.

The employees of Davis’ only brewery are proud of what they’ve accomplished in 2014, and look forward to building more friendships in 2015. As they say in German, Prost!

Sudwerk: 2014 in review

January: Releases first Brewers Cut series of barrel-aged beers.

February: Releases spring seasonal, Mai Bock Spring Lager, and 3 Best Friends, a dark coffee, vanilla chocolate lager.

May: Releases its first Double India Pale Lager, the BIG DIPL.

September: Produces the Wylde Ryce Lager for Yolo Basin Foundation; Makes its 2014 fresh hop beer, Wet Hop Lager; Collaborates with home brewers to make Basil Saison for Great American Beer Fest Pro-Am competition.

December: Releases Bourbonator, a barrel-aged Doppel Bock

Building on 25 years of family legacy and brewing tradition, Sudwerk Brewing Co. specializes in artisanal brews, specifically West Coast craft lagers. It offers a rotating menu of experimental and innovative beers, “honest pints” and growler fills, fresh White Labs brewers’ yeast, and good conversation. Learn more at http://sudwerkbrew.com. Magor Brewery Commemorates 35th Anniversary

The 35th anniversary of Magor Brewery was honoured with the addition of a commemorative plaque in September.

AB InBev brews popular brands such as Stella Artois, Budweiser and Beck’s in the Welsh border town brewery.

The brewery in Magor has been standing since 1979 and is amongst the biggest breweries in the United Kingdom.

David Ball, an attendee at the birthday celebrations who had the privilege to unveil the plaque, explained how he has worked at the brewery for 31 years, having taken a job in the laboratory when he was just 18 years old.

David progressed to being a forklift truck driver before he moved into the brewing department.

Speaking at the unveiling, David continued on to say that he had seen a lot of changes take place there during his time and was proud to have worked alongside a few other members of staff who had been there the same amount of time as he.

David’s father even helped to build the brewery back in 1979!

Producing 792 million pints a year is no easy task and in order to meet demand, the brewery stays open 24 hours a day.

Itasca, Ill’s Church Street Brewing Adds More Fermenters

Church Street Brewing Company has done it again! If you thought ten 30 BBL fermenters were enough, think again. The brewery recently added another four 30 BBL fermenters to its brewing system. Unloading four fermenters out of a semi-truck is no easy task; ask owners Lisa and Joe Gregor! However such a task must be completed in order to keep up with Church Street’s consumer demand.

Church Street Brewing Company began in 2012 with just 6 fermenters, supplying a few traditional beers to the craft beer market. Since 2012, the brewery has added a nice variety of classic beer styles to the list, including its latest Polish Pilsner, Lublinskie. Church Street will continue to expand its beer styles to satisfy consumer demand thanks to the system expansion.

Church Street Brewing Company is a family business built on the dream of crafting the highest quality ales and lagers from around the world. The story began with a home brewing kit that made for a fun hobby, eventually leading to a production facility in Itasca, IL in February 2012. Brewmaster Joe Gregor’s love of classic European beers and owner Lisa Gregor’s passion for running a successful brewery has continued to inspire and grow the company with the help and dedication of all its employees. Spice Beer: A Holiday Tradition

During their annual “First Pour” event in late October, the staff at Great Lakes Brewing Co.’s brewpub in Cleveland poured 430 pints of Christmas Ale every 60 minutes for 12 consecutive hours. That’s one pint every eight seconds.

While those gaudy numbers might suggest an attempt to break some obscure world record, the clamor for Christmas Ale was simply a reflection of Ohioans’ adoration for the seasonal spice beer.

“It’s our second-biggest seller, and it’s only available eight weeks out of the year,” says Marissa DeSantis, communications specialist for GLBC. “The only beer that sells more than that is our flagship Dortmunder Gold lager, which is available year-round. So it’s pretty big for us.”

Indeed, winter spice beers produced by America’s small and independent brewers embody the spirit of the holiday season, with flavors of cinnamon, ginger and everything in between.

And folks go crazy for them.

Down in Asheville, N.C., Highland Brewing Co. unveils the iconic Cold Mountain Winter Ale each November just before Thanksgiving, and for the entire month it’s the talk of the town. Fans skip work on Cold Mountain Monday to raid area stores for the spiced amber brew, emptying shelves within hours or even minutes. Local bars tapping the beer are typically filled to capacity. And the release party at the brewery—which was expanded to a four-day event this year—has become so popular that Highland established a shuttle service from a nearby shopping center to accommodate the thousands who swarmed the brewery for the first taste.

So why all the fuss? Let’s open up the kitchen cabinet and discover why, when it comes to holiday beers, variety is the spice of life.

The Rich History of Spice Beer

Herbs, spices and other flavorings have found their way into beer throughout the history of brewing. They served as beer’s bittering and flavoring agents before the use of hops became widespread around the 13th century.

As GLBC points out in its brand fact sheet for Christmas Ale, the tradition of holiday beers began in the Middle Ages when spices were commonly used instead of hops to add flavor and medicinal qualities to beer. According to GLBC, the style re-emerged in the early 1900s in the northern countries of Western Europe when local brewers began creating specialty holiday brews for their favored patrons.

Today, holiday spice beers generally fall into one of two groups: those that incorporate the same recipe year after year, and those that are annually tweaked—their exact recipe kept secret.

Cold Mountain, and the beer that inspired it, Anchor Brewing’s Christmas Ale, are examples of the latter. John Lyda, vice president and brewmaster at Highland, has experimented with many ingredients for Cold Mountain over the years since its inception in the late 1990s, always searching for that magical melding of holiday flavors.

Ditto for Anchor. Celebrating 40 years in 2014, Anchor’s Christmas Ale is among the oldest and most revered of all U.S. holiday beers—though the recipe is constantly evolving.

Craft Beer Spice

“Our first spiced ale was in 1987, and over the years we’ve tried a number of spices,” says Anchor brewmaster Mark Carpenter. “Every year we sit down and talk about what we think we can do to make it better next year.”

This year Carpenter made some more noticeable changes to Christmas Ale than in the past, as the brewery aims to perfect a particular style of darker spiced ale. The 2014 version features aromas of citrus fruit, spices and subtle piney hop notes, while the flavor has a “sarsaparilla-like sweetness” with rich caramel maltiness and a pleasantly balanced back-end bitterness.

Carpenter says his staff has always used a number of different spices in the beer, adding them at various phases of the brewing process from the mash to the kettle to the cellar, and the order varies year to year. “This year, some things that we were aging in the cellar we moved to the kettle because I wanted to see what the difference would be,” he says. “So it’s really just an experiment every year.”

Part of the fun is reaching beyond traditional holiday spices. “It should have a nice holiday spice flavor to it, but hopefully we’ve incorporated things that one might not necessarily think of,” Carpenter says. And that’s why Anchor is mum about the Christmas Ale recipe—the company keeps even the malt and hop bills “top secret.”

“I mean, I could tell you the recipe and then you’d go, ‘Oh, yeah, I can taste that,’ and then that would be it,” Carpenter says. “I think there’s a certain amount of fun in drinking the beer and trying to identify the different flavors. Over the years we’ve had so many people try to identify different spices and there’s a couple things we have revealed. One, there has never been allspice in it, and we came forward with that because so many people said, ‘Oh, you use allspice.’ But there has never been allspice. In two or three years we used frankincense, and I was never a big fan of frankincense so thank God we finally got rid of that.”

Meanwhile, GLBC falls into the other school of thought, maintaining the same recipe for Christmas Ale year after year.

“People really love it, and especially in our backyard it’s become such a big tradition that for us to change it would be blasphemy–I think people would be rioting in the streets,” DeSantis says with a chuckle. “We want to stick with what we know works.”

The Cleveland brewer’s Christmas Ale, which became available in bottles back in 1992, weighs in at a warming 7.5 percent alcohol by volume (ABV) and is made with cinnamon, honey and fresh ginger, the latter two of which are steeped into the brew kettle during boiling. The beer utilizes five different malts—including wheat for body and head retention, and roasted barley for overall complexity and color—plus hop varieties that complement the spices.

“Contrary to some comments we get, (the recipe) has never changed,” DeSantis says. “But since we use raw honey and other natural ingredients, those flavors can vary year to year, so that might account for any minor fluctuations people taste in the beer. Personally, I think it’s pretty consistent, and we certainly haven’t changed the base recipe for the beer.”

Food for Thought

Craft Beer and FruitcakeBrewers agree that most spiced holiday beers should be served at about 45°F, though Carpenter believes that geography and ambient temperature can be important variables. While 45°F is warm enough to release the distinctive aromas and flavors of a hearty holiday beer, he says, someone living in more temperate southern climates might enjoy the beer a bit cooler, especially since it will warm up in the glass with each satisfying sip.

At the dinner table, holiday beers can be quite versatile with their tantalizing blend of holiday spices, rich malts and the citrusy, earthy and Christmas tree-like pine notes from the hops. Holiday beers also can be fun to cook with. GLBC recently published a recipe book that incorporated Christmas Ale in a glaze for ham.

DeSantis’ favorite pairing for GLBC’s Christmas Ale is spiced apple tart or any dish with apple pie spices. According to Carpenter, Anchor’s Christmas Ale pairs well with rich meats, thick saucy dishes, roasted vegetables and “even your aunt’s fruitcake.”

“Listen, you can’t beat holiday dinner with our Christmas Ale,” Carpenter says. “I just love that—I look forward to it every year. I drink a beer when we’re making it at the brewery, obviously, but the first time I really enjoy it is with Thanksgiving dinner, especially the turkey dressing with the Christmas Ale—you just can’t beat it.”

Well, yes, you can: Give holiday ale a go for Christmas dinner, too!

SanTan Brewing Company’s Winter Warmer, Second Vault Series Release, Available Now in 16 oz Cans

SanTan Brewing Company’s Winter Warmer, Second Vault Series Release, Available Now in 16 oz Cans

Chandler, Arizona (December 4, 2014)—Winter has arrived in Arizona and so has the official launch of SanTan Brewing Company’s beloved holiday favorite, Winter Warmer. A glass of Winter Warmer tastes how you would imagine a cup of Christmas would be with its spiced aroma, fresh ginger and orange blossom honey flavor. In the pub, Winter Warmer is also served with a warm gingersnap cookie for an extra touch of holiday spirit.

This year, fans are in for an extra special treat. The 2014 Winter Warmer has been conditioned for a minimum of eight weeks creating a bold flavor and bringing the ABV up to 9.5%. It is also the second beer to be released in SanTan’s 16 oz canned Vault Series.

The 2014 Winter Warmer Vault Series is available now on tap at SanTan Brewing Company and in 16 oz cans across Arizona, California and Texas at select bars, restaurants and retail locations – while supplies last.

The Vault Series is a collection of limited release specialty craft beers inspired by the Valley National Bank’s iconic vault, which still remains at SanTan Brewing Company’s downtown Chandler brewpub. All Vault Series beers have a high ABV of 9% or more and are conditioned for a minimum of six to eight weeks. This is SanTan Brewing Company’s first 16 oz canned series.

“The 6-8 week conditioning process is essential for this series due to the high alcohol content. By slowing things down and allowing the yeast to slowly condition the beer we’re able to produce a strong but balanced southwestern style ale,” said founder and brewmaster, Anthony Canecchia.

After Winter Warmer, the Vault Series lineup will include: Mad Czar Russian Imperial Stout, Fat AleBert Hey Hey Heavyweight Brown, Lalapalupalin Ridiculous IPA and KiloHop Ludicrous IPA.

To find a pint or can of SanTan’s Vault Series beers near you, visit SanTan Brewing Company’s Beer Finder online at http://ift.tt/1AoQLub.

About SanTan Brewing Company

Open since 2007 under the leadership of founder and brewmaster, Anthony Canecchia, SanTan Brewing Company has established a strong reputation as one of Arizona’s favorite craft breweries. In addition to brewing, SanTan features a friendly neighborhood brewpub in Downtown Chandler, which has quickly become one of the top local food and beer destinations in the Phoenix metro area.

All SanTan Brewing Company craft beers are Southwestern Style Ales. SanTan’s brews are fermented to completion and carbonated higher than traditional American beers for a more effervescent, crisp and refreshing hand crafted beer – perfect for quenching your thirst in the hot Arizona sun and throughout the southwestern region of the US.

In 2009, SanTan Brewing began distributing their Southwestern Style Ales throughout the state of Arizona, operating with a mission to pair craft beer with craft food that would inspire great conversation and good times. 2014 marks the beginning of taking this journey throughout the Southwest and California.

SanTan beers have won numerous national and statewide awards including two medals at the US Open Beer Championship: bronze in 2013 and gold in 2011. SanTan Brewing also took home a silver medal at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival and won Best Brewery in Arizona, selected by the Phoenix New Times and the Arizona Republic, in 2013 and 2011.
