Meet the Man Who Recreated the IBU Formula - via AHA

“So when I should have been finishing my dissertation, I was actually over in the hop lab.”

Glenn Tinseth is a man of many hats. He’s a homebrewer, a chemistry professor at Humboldt State and a substitute brewer for Mad River Brewing Company. When Tinseth was supposed to be pursuing his dissertation years ago, he put the international bittering unit (IBU) calculation of the time to the test, and found out that the model was wrong. Tinseth came up with a formula for calculating IBUs that is now widely used among professional and home brewers.
