Homebrew Recipes Go Head to Head for Super Bowl 50 - via AHA

There are only a few more days until the biggest sporting event of the year: Super Bowl 50!

In the spirit of competition, we’re pitting two Super Bowl-inspired homebrew recipes against each other and letting YOU decide who will be victorious.

The recipes are past National Homebrew Competition Final Round gold medalists from Colorado and North Carolina.

Mile High American Pale Ale*

Originally entered as “Lara Pale Ale,” this American pale ale was made by Colorado homebrewer Richard Lane and earned a gold medal in Category 10: American Ale in the Final Round of the 2009 National Homebrew Competition.

Specs:

  • Original Gravity: 1.050
  • Final Gravity: 1.011
  • Bitterness: 28 IBUs
  • Color: 7 SRM

Ingredients for 23 gal (87 L):

  • 34.0 lb | pale malt
  • 3.0 lb | Munich malt
  • 8.0 oz | 15L crystal malt
  • 3.0 oz | Goldings hops (60 min)
  • 2.5 oz | Fuggle hops (30 min)
  • 3.25 oz | Amarillo hops (10 min)
  • 3.25 oz | Amarillo hops (5 min)
  • 1.0 oz | Cascade hops (1 min)
  • 1.0 oz | Fuggle hops (1 min)
  • White Labs WLP002 English ale yeast

Big Purr English Pale Ale*

Originally entered as “Ol’ Bitter Bastard,” this English pale ale was made by North Carolina homebrewer Patrick Collins and earned a gold medal in Category 8: English Pale Ale in the Final Round of the 2013 National Homebrew Competition.

Specs:

  • Original Gravity: 1.037
  • Final Gravity: 1.012
  • Bitterness: 19.5 IBUS
  • Color: 8.3 SRM

Ingredients for 5.5 gal (20.82 L):

  • 6.75 lb | Maris Otter malt
  • 0.56 lb | 15° L crystal malt
  • 0.44 lb | 85° L dark crystal malt
  • 0.31 lb | Dinegmans biscuit malt
  • 0.7 oz | U.S. Goldings hops (FWH)
  • 0.6 oz | U.S Goldings hops (60 min)
  • 0.5 oz. | Fuggles hops (20 min)
  • 0.6 oz | U.S. Goldings hops (10 min)
  • 0.5 oz | Fuggles hops (0 min)
  • 0.4 oz | U.S. Goldings hops (0 min)
  • Wyeast 1469 West Yorkshire ale yeast
